Thinking about removing the governor questions though??
Ok First off I have a 1990 Yamaha G2. The thing is I like to drive down the road to my families house, and it just isn't very fast at all. I think it is suppose to go 12 mph, but that would be a big stretch. Feels more like 7 or 8mph tops. The question I have is this. It seems like when I hit the gas it is either full throttle, or no throttle. I can hold the pedal halfway, but it still goes to top speed. It doesn't cut out like when you hold the pedal to the floor, but it seems like it goes the same speed. It just doesn't kick in and out. If I remove the governor will it be the same way? I'd hate to remove it, and it be full throttle, or a no throttle kinda thing. especially with no governor removed. I wish it was more like a car, and could take off kinda slow. I don't know if maybe it is just out of adjustment or what, but any help on this would be great. Thanks

Check the carb throttle. Sounds like the throttle cable has your carbs throttle hung wide open. You hit the peddle and the peddle switch starts up your cart and then it is wide open until you let off the peddle and it dies out.

Re: Thinking about removing the governor questions though??
It needs to be adjusted. Check all the cables make sure they are working both ways. You can turn the 10mm nut in on the governor arm its on top of the trans, get under the rear bumper with a 1/4 drive and deep socket. That will speed it up to maybe 20 or that range. Likely as said its out of adjustment. Some people think pulling the cable up makes them go faster and it does not really. So turn the key off and pull the panel up under the pedals. Then adjust the cable until the top of pedal moves about 1" before the carb starts to open. Set it to idle real slow that will help it start faster (idle with the pedal less than 1" down). Adjust the pedal switch underneath so it starts with little pedal movement if you need to, should switch right away when you move pedal. Unless the cable is broken and someone just fixed it with the carb open, that will be obvious. It should drive like a car and have more/less power where ever the pedal is at, until you hit the governed speed. I can sit still just touching the pedal and mine idles at about 900rpm, but its a clone engine in there now. It works exactly like it did stock, but I took the governor off the day I got the cart in '99 lol.
Note the cable goes from the pedal to the governor arm, then a second cable goes to the carb that you don't usually need to mess with. You can avoid the governor if you want by making the pedal cable go to carb, or keep it on. I drilled out the arm so it moved on the trans governor shaft to disable it. If you like the governor it should work fine as described above. Most G2 don't go much faster than full governor (nut all the way in) they have an ignition limiter in them. You put a lift on and 22s you can get close to 30mph or so because it gears it up. |

Re: Thinking about removing the governor questions though??
Ok, Thanks a lot for that info. I might just try to tighten the nut down, and adjust the cable. I am going to a 22" tire so all the way tightened down with 22" tires should be plenty. I should be getting my tune-up kit in the mail in the next day or two. I'll probably be back on here with more questions. I'll try to do it at the same time I tune it up.

Re: Thinking about removing the governor questions though??
G2 have a rev limit, it will cut out if you rev it too high. That point is not far beyond having the governor all the way in with the G2 I have worked on.
22 atv tire should get you 27-30mph depending. 22 lawn tire is not as big. Some 22 measure 23 if you air them up, mine do, I can hit 30 on the level on pavement but its screaming and my G9 had no limiter in it. 25 was not bad and sustainable without thrashing it hard. It would only go 28 (gps) on level dirt road/drives. Big bugs start to hurt at 30mph lol. Make sure it steers good too, alignment is good. |

Re: Thinking about removing the governor questions though??
There's never any guaranty's. The rev. limiter just kicks the engine back at a certain rpm. It feels like it shuts the engine off and then starts it back up when rpms are lower. Just a secondary measure in case the governor is adjusted too far out. I personally can't stand the rev limiters.
I will say this. A well maintened Yamaha engine will last a long time. They are some of the toughest engines I've ever seen. |
