Default G2 Rear Wheel Bearing Job

Currently I have the rear end apart for painting, inspection, brake work. With everything apart, I think I should replace the wheel bearings. What is the best way to slide them off the axle shaft?

I think putting new ones on will involve warming them up and then tapping them with a steel pipe/hammer.

Thank You, Trent

If I was you, I will take them to a shop and have them remove with their bearing press and then have them press the new ones in. That way, you do not run the risk of marring the shaft. Heating a sealed bearing may ruin the polymer plastic that cover the bearing sides. Heating a sealed bearing may ruin the polymer plastic that cover the bearing sides. If a shop is not an option for you, I would be very careful when removing the old bearing. You can use a vise press as support and use a block of wood to at the end of the shaft to prevent marring when hammering. And to press it back in, a pipe will do the job. Once again, I would have a shop taking them out and press them back in.

The shop is the best way to go.
Me on the other hand, do it myself. I break off the outer part of the bearing and then take my grinder and grind one spot on the race. I don't go down to the axle. Then take a chisel and hit it at that spot to crack the race and it falls off. Can be tricky but I have done a lot of them that way.

Thank you both! We have machine shops around. Money is not an issue. I just don't want to get it back with some unseen damage to the new bearings, spline, or shaft seal surface.

Thanks again,
Trent

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but, Yamaha G2 axles were built with the axle shaft, then the bearing slid on, then the axle flange is welded on. No press is going to help replace the bearings. Sorry.

Well that isn't too smart? So you have to buy a complete axle?

Smallblock,

If I understand what you just stated, yamaha builds the shaft, press the bearing from the outside, then slide put a sleeve over the shaft followed by the welded flange? . That will be a first for me. I just had mine out and looks just like my old car. Sealed bearings pressed on on the shaft. I will have to look at mine again.

WOW, Thanks Smallblock. Since I have everything apart, I was going to replace them and was ready to start cutting, busting, grinding the old ones off. I had noticed there was no step in the shaft - seemed like the shaft should have stepped down on the inner side and remained smaller all the way to the spline.

If I look at the exploded view of the axles, it shows NO bearing, or bearing part number!

How did I function before the days of forums?

Looks like this baby is going back together as is!

Thanks, Trent

Never said it was smart. Never said I was the the smartest guy, just telling the poster what I know. Yes you'd have to buy a new axle assy.

I was not talking about you Smallblock, I was talking about Yamaha. I am sorry about wording it that way.
