Default G-1 Goes in reverse but not forward

Hi,

I have an early '80s Yamaha G-1 cart that will go in reverse just fine, but when I switch it over to forward... I get nothing.

I'm not very mechanically inclined. I read on here that it might be the relays that sit above the passenger side rear wheel. How do I test these to see if they are O.K? How do I test the switch to see if it is working correctly?

Thanks for any help!

Drew

Try putting the diraction selector in Reverse apply the gas and wiggle the selector. Did the cart move?

Yep, I can drive it around the yard in reverse, but it won't go in forward. I've tried wiggling it around and I still get nothing in forward.

Thanks

Well, at least you know the cart works There are 2 things I would look at first one is the micro switch for the forward selector. Hereon called the F&R switch. It will have 2 micro-switches. Move the lever and observe that one clicks in F and the other in R. Next I would check to see that the linkage is okay and that the lever is actually putting the tranny into Reverse.

This is a G-1. It has the gear selector in the key. Not seeing any linkage. Justthe relays above the rear wheel that I believe tell it which way to go.

Thanks

Well it sounds like you’re forward RELAY is bad or it’s the f&r switch. The best way to test it is by using a volt meter, when the switch is on reverse you will see voltage in one RELAY and the other will be dead. Now switch to forward and test the other relay if u only get the voltage going in to the RELAY and not going out (or u don’t get the proper reading) to the starter/generator u know it’s the RELAY if u dont get any reading going in to the relay at all then its the f&r switch. The g1 is a two stroke and when u change directions the engine spins in the other directions. (That’s how I think it works I never actually checked it) and that is why it only works in reverse not forward.

You say early 80's, do you know the serial# ? Do your solenoids have "post" comeing out the front and back or just the front ? If you have posts front and rear....you will have 2 small wires (1- blue/1-yellow) going to the back of your solenoids and that is what "activates/energizes" the solenoids from the key switch and stop/micro switch. I would take a volt meter and check for voltage when the key switch is in forward and reverse and you push on the accelerator pedal. If you have good voltage...bad solenoid, if not bad wiring/or key switch. Also there will be 2 small black wires at the back of the solenoids, you should have 12 volts negative at these wires all the time. Hope it helps. Dave

O.K so I had good voltage in the blue and yellow wires so I figured bad selenoid. I bought a brand new one, put it in and still have the same problem. In reverse, when I step on the gas, I can here the relay kick on and she goes like crazy... put it in forward and hit the gas and I get nothing.

Any other ideas?

Thanks
