Default Drilling holes in acrylic windshield?

I have just bought a new windshield for my g2. It fits my custom setup good but I need to drill some holes in it to mount on the bottom. Can it be done without destroying the windshield?

I have never done it, but if I were to attempt it I would start with very small bits and work my way up to the desired diameter 1/64th at a time, slow speed, very light pressure.

Bob,

My personal experience with acrylic ... use caution!!. The acrylic tends to want to not bend, and heats up and melts, and lots of other nasty things.

The best way I came upon to drill holes in the acrylic was to use a step drill, and stop occasionally to make sure it is not melting. I cracked a large piece off trying to use a 1/2" drill bit, when I was drilling close to the edge..

Maybe others have more experience, but the step drills seemed to work best for me.

This would be about an inch from the edge.

I have drilled acrylic before. The thing I have done is heat the bit. I know someone said to be careful with it melting. I have had good luck with a hot bit spinning fast. It should drill the whole pretty quickly. You may be able to get a piece of an old windshield to try it on if you have a local cart shop. I hope this helps. Good Luck with your project.

The small-step Uni-Bits(the one that starts almost as a point) work great.I do Acrylic sheets in some of the vans I set up,and the Uni-Bit goes thru nicely.Be careful about the pressure when you start, sometimes it will crack on initial penetration. After you drill it to the size you want, lightly hit the opposite side with the same bit,and it will chamfer the hole, and clean the burrs as well.Hope this helps.

Here's what you do. Get a steel rod that is the same size as the hole you want. Grind a point at one end of it. Then heat it in a fire. Now just push it through the acrylic windshield forming a perfect hole. I have done this with good results.
