g1 no foward

my g1 has no forward but it does have reverse I swaped the wires on the solenoids and now I have forward but no reverse still which I figured would be the case but the solenoid makes and audio clicking sound that's nice and loud but that's it tried butting my friends solenoid in its place and still doesent work I have the old style with the connections only on the front any advice

The clicking does not necessarily mean it's making contact..If you swapped them around and it worked I would say you need a solenoid....

As Todd says, what can happen is the set of contacts inside can fail due to the arcing each time they engage.
Were there a way to open it up you could file the contacts and they should work fine.
But it is doubtful one could reassemble the solenoid again so replacement is called for.

also all wires on starter gen have 12 voilts odd to me
