Engine rebuid suggestions

I am going to rebuild the motor in my G14. It has lost some power, has a vibration, and is starting to burn some oil as well as leak a little. It's ready for a rebuild. I have run it hard for the past five years and who knows what happended to it before that. I was wondering what different easy mods I could do to it to give it maybe a little more power? I know it's only small horsepower and am not looking to do wheelies. Just want to do all the best things to it I can while I have it apart.

Talk to plowmans he is only one I heard of that can get more power out of some of the yamahas mostly newer ones not sure. Otherwise difficult to get power out of them they need a cam and the ports are small. Higher flow airbox/exhaust/jetting does not get you much, likely new bore and piston will get you the most increase. That is one reason some suffer through a clone install they have a lot more power and you can build them up to 30hp if you want. My 420 is way fun now in a G9, it does not compare to stock. But if I made the exhaust really quiet and only let the carb open half way you would never know it had a clone in it. You do what you can with the stock engine, most advances are found in better clutching with stock power.

Thank you for the info. I don't want the thing to be loud. I like how quiet it is being stock. I just think the engine is getting tired and it probably needs new rings and valve cleaning. I bought a primary clutch from ebay and what a mistake that was. Works good, but makes an awful noise when starting. Like the insides are loose. They replaced my first one and the second one does the same thing. Never buy cheap junk from ebay. Learned my lesson well......

The cylinder might be good, personally if it was not bored recently I have never had good luck with putting rings in an engine they are always worn out and need a bore job. But yes I'd recommend you freshen it up and look at the clutching, you can get help with that here. It makes the most of what power you do have. Putting a clone in is a project I can say that after doing two of them. I would try porting the head some on my stock engine but do not plan to put it back in. You can not port too much or you go through and have to weld it up.

Agree with sho on the bore job . It's hard to beat a nice straight cylinder and new piston/rings on a rebuild. Break in should be quick with no oil burning. - RAY

Got the motor out today. I was surprised at how easy it was to take out. 30 minutes and I was lifting it out. Got both body parts off and am going to paint them as well. Plan on tearing the motor down either tonight or tomorrow. I noticed that under the engine on the belly pan is a thick ;ayer of insulation. It is soaked in oil and dirt. Do you think that if I threw that away that it would let the engine breath better? I think that is alot of the problem is the engine was getting hot. I will have alot of questions through this process, so thank you in advance for all of your input. The stock motor used to have enough power for what I do. I just ride around on the back roads with my kids, and go to a few fishing holes.

Got all of the platsic pieces, starter, and brackets off the engine. Took the head off as well. Inside, there was alot of hard carbon build up around the valves. What whould be the cause of that. Also I notices that when I grab the fan, the crank shaft has a slight in an out movement. Maybe 1/8". Is that normal??

the ethanol they are putting in fuel will cause a lot of carbon build up.

I never knew that. I called cartpartsplus and talked to a very knowlegable fella, who set me up with all of the parts that I needed. He also gave me a few tips. Great people to deal with. He also said that some of the caarbon build up could be from all of the oil it was burning as well. They will be here on Wednesday. Going to get the body painted tomorrow :)
