rebuilt motor still doesn't run....
After a new carb. spacer and a new solenoid it still doesn't want to run much over an idle. Any more suggestions?? I am going to hook up a timing light and see if the spark cuts out when I try to rev it up. Sound like a good idea??

What kind of cart? Did you check compression? Also is your fuel pump working? Check spark at the plug while you are cranking it.

G14. Fuel line squirts out gas very well. Has good compression. Just put new ring in it, the starter has a hard time turning it over. I'm starting to lean towards an electrical problem. What electrical part does everyone have the most problem with??

Do you have any history on the cart. Did you ever see it run good?

Spark testers used to be $5 at autozone or similar store.

Re: rebuilt motor still doesn't run....
i run the cart for 5 years without a problem. It just started burning oil and losing power when hot so I decided that I would give it a quick rebuild. I drove it into the garage before taking the motor out. After I rebuilt it, it will not rev up at all. The thing idles perfect. But it you try to step on the throttle at all it starts to skip. The more you step on it, the worse it is.

Check your wiring to the ignitor.

Re: rebuilt motor still doesn't run....
Ok. I checked all the wiring. Everything seems to be plugged in well and together. With the timing light on, when idling, it has a nice steady flash to it. When I step on the throttle, it flashes erraticly. So I am almost 100% sure it's electrical. Should I try a coil? I really hate to spend the money on a ignitor and not have it be the problem.

Re: rebuilt motor still doesn't run....
I would first make sure you check all the ground wires and any fuses. Yamaha are notorious for bad connections and grounds, since everything is grounded via wires not the frame. Especially the ground on the coil and engine block/etc. or any ignition component.
It could be a weak spark, try a different plug they do foul out. Try pulling the plug lead part way off to create a gap in the boot (or use a spark tester with a gap). In some cases the gap will force a stronger spark to build up, sometimes it just wont jump the gap. It should jump well over 1/4". I would guess a coil only because the ignitor usually works or it dont. You can gently squeeze the ignitor when they fail they sometimes work that way. Also common for them to fail when hot. But I'd check the wiring first that is 100X more common than a bad part. |

Re: rebuilt motor still doesn't run....
Thanks for the great info. I have hoooked an unhooked the wires quite a few times. I just took the starter/gen apart and cleaned and put back together. All the wires are tight. Does the engine ground to the frame at all? It must because I have lights that I just hooked the ground to the frame. A new plug is a pretty simple thing...I should of thought of that. I will give it a try.
