G21A has NO spark
I pulled out of the garage and it just quit flat out. Pulled the plug and rested against the case and there is no spark whatsoever. I had a weak spark once and replaced the "pickup", but this has zero spark this time. The print is hard to read on the manual, I am used to ladder diagrams being an electrician. Any clues where to start and where to buy parts when I find out what needs bought? I replaced the plug!!
Thanks in advance!!! |

Re: G21A has NO spark
If look on your wiring diagram, you will find a relay (probably I.D.'d as #1) that is labeled "stop relay". As part of your troubleshooting, you should check that this relay is operating properly. After that, the ignition coil could be bad. Good luck - RAY
P.S. - I'm not sure if this relay grounds or ungrounds the wire from the ignition coil to kill the spark. Need additional input from someone more knowledgeable on this. |

Re: G21A has NO spark
I held the relay in my hand and could feel it clicking when I pushed the pedal. The diagrams are hard to read.

Re: G21A has NO spark
Should the ignition coil or "pickup" as the manual calls it, be getting 12 volts?

Re: G21A has NO spark
Not 100% sure but I don't think so. I think it is the type of ignition that has the electronics all tied up within the coil and laminations. Magnets in the flywheel cause the coil to give a spark every revolution. There is one wire coming from the coil and that is the stop wire. Like I said in my previous post, not sure if "stop" has this wire grounded or ungrounded. The wire goes to the "stop" relay and the stop relay then either grounds or ungrounds it (not sure which) when you let off the gas. Need someone to chime in here for more help. - RAY

Re: G21A has NO spark
Ahhhh...looking at the print that makes sense. It grounds to stop the engine. I ordered a new pickup, or T.C.I. unit as they call it. Last time mice ate the cable, probably happened again.

Re: G21A has NO spark
Correction, if the print is drawn correctly, it grounds the wire to make the engine start, ungrounds it to stop the engine.

Re: G21A has NO spark
OK, this has been bugging me, so I went to my G16 service manual and here is what I found:
Grounding the blue wire from the TCI kills the spark. (so the relay is closed when de-energized) The test in the manual says to unplug the wires at the stop relay and if no spark is present to replace the TCI unit. (looks like your plan !!) If you want to test your pick-up (TCI) here are the resistances listed in the manual: Spark plug lead to blue wire = 10.5K ohm to 12.9K ohms. (shouldn't include resistance of plug boot) Blue wire to ground = .9 to 1.5 ohms. Hope this helps. Let us know how the new pickup works. - RAY |

Re: G21A has NO spark
Looks like they drew the print wrong. It shows the stop relay contacts open with the accellerator pedal switch open. I will check it and see how it actually works.

Re: G21A has NO spark
Looks like it's wrong!! A normally open relay wouldn't be "fail safe" anyway. Let me know what you find when you test your relay. - RAY
