g1 speed help
I have a 81 g1 that I just got and used it all weekend at the campground and fixed the squeling I was having with the help here replacing both belts. But I brought it home this week to play around with it. I removed the little nut from the philips screw on the governor and threaded the screw all the way in seating the grove on the spring on the rear axle. I just took it down on the street and with gps only getting 13 mph I sure would of thought it would of went faster than that. Seems like it is running fine just slower than what I am finding. It has stock tires and everything else seems stock.

Re: g1 speed help
If you want to make it really fly, drill out the 'D' shape at the top of the governor arm and loosen the clamping screw. The governor is essentially disabled at that point. It you want to make the governor active again, just tighten the clamping screw. You can also set it anywhere between disabled and really slow.

Re: g1 speed help
Thanks I may look at that in the morning I assume the screw you are saying leave slightly loose is the one to tighten back down if I want governor again

Re: g1 speed help
You can put a longer screw in against the spring. Note that puts more pressure on the cable and wears them out faster, that is why people disable the governor if they drive it that way all the time. To test disable put a pair of the small vicegrips on the other side of the spring clamp it to the lever it is in...the side opposite the adjustment screw. Make sure the vicegrips can't hit anything or get caught through throttle movement range before you run it that way. The handle usually touches the air hose, its only for temp use.

Re: g1 speed help
Glad you fixed the sqealing, that can be annoying.
I forget, did you ever check compression? Although if it's running smooth and starts really easy I wouldn't suspect a compression issue. Another problem could be a dirty carb and/or air filter. A new plug may also help if you didn't already do that. Basic mechanicals can go a long way to help a cart run well and have more power. I'm sure your governor is holding you back. How much is to be determined. With a performance muffler and jetted carb, my G1 will do 27 mph on the very top end. It takes a while to get there, but it will do 22mph easily in a decently short distance. You should get more mph if you eliminiate the governor. Have you removed the exhaust butterfly? I didn't notice a difference, but some people have by removing the butterfly. Take your muffler off and look inside the exhaust flange. You'll see a butterfly with two screws in it. take the screws out and remove the butterfly. Save it. One thing I tried recently that seemed to help with power was changed to a leaded and ethanol free fuel. Around here we call that "CAM 2" fuel. Guys use it for racing dirt bikes and cars, but it's a great clean fuel with no ethanol and high octane, around 114. It's worth a try, since we don't use a ton of fuel in our carts it's worth the extra cost. Last time I checked it was around $6 a gallon. for a 5 gallon fill that's only $10 more for better fuel. Also try an additive that neutralizes ethanol, usually $1 or so for 5 gallon mix. I've done both and noticed a difference. No, it's not like adding a turbocharger, but for me it was significant enough that I will continue to use race gas. The only problem is finding it. |

Re: g1 speed help
What size drill bit did you use to drill out the D shape on the governor arm?
