Default G1 and a dead battery

So, over the winter I picked up an old G1 and it runs great and after I BBQed the muffler, it doesn't smoke (much) anymore but the battery that I got with the golf cart seems to die after extended running and I am wondering if there is a problem with the charging circuit or if my battery is just toast. I tried charging the battery with a charger and it didn't take a charge like a healthy battery should, so I'm assuming it is toast, but since it would die after some extended running, I'm still worried about the charging circuit.

Now the golf cart is at the campground and I am only there every couple of weeks, so when I head out there this weekend with a new battery and a volt meter, what should I be looking for to see if the charging circuit is working?

You really need to use volt meter hooked to battery while cart is running and make sure the volts go up on the battery while it is running say 12 at sitting still and 14 while running as long as they go up it is charging. I would say the battery will fix the problem but have to check hate to kill new battery.
