Default trying to tune carb g9

So I bought a g9 a couple weeks ago and I'm just about done putting it together. I bypassed the gov. but when test driving it i'm just not that fast ( compared to my other goverened g9) so we where playing with the sdjustment screw on the carb and nothing really changed the speed ( anyone know how many turns out the screw on the carb is soupossed to be)

But when I pulled the air hose off the carb and ran it. it flew down the road. now i;m at a point where i'm really not sure where to go.
anyone have any ideas
thanks

Try replacing the air filter?

If your talking about the air mixture screw, lightly seated, 1 1/2 turns out. G2/G9 style air box's are finicky. The 4 rubber straps/the air box lid seal and the air box lid have to seal correctly.

Airbox is restrictive but the engine is made to run that way. When you take the hose off the carb the air does not flow into it that well, that is why performance engines with open carbs run air horns. Of course with a golf cart you would trash the engine in a short time with dust going into the engine. Try sealing the box well and getting it to fit together tight like Smallblock suggests, replace the rubber pulls and put bolts in the side to hook them to if you need to. The carb will be jetted right with the box sealed and when I took the silencer off mine and hogged the jet out I don't think it really helped it much, or not enough to tell. It ran nice and started faster, but far as power it did little for it. Is very difficult to get more power out of stock engine without major changes, best to get it to run well and work on the clutches to get more power or speed. With 22 tires I managed 30mph gps on paved road after a while, 28 on a dirt drive, both flat areas, it was screaming, no governor at all. With a clone engine it went 31gps, with some mods but stock block/internals it now goes 37gps on pavement, no governor of course. Not sure I need it to go faster until I upgrade the steering and suspension, but the added power is a lot more fun.

The whole air box, gaskets. pull tabs. filter. pre filter are all brand new from the dealer. but we lose alot of power when its all hooked up. take it off and it runs 3times quicker. I will try to reset the carb to 1 1/2 turns out and make sure the air box is all good and tight and see what it does. another issue we are having is the battery is not getting charged. i plan on getting my meter and checking it out, anything known to be a problem on the g9 charging system?

just another tidbit. when we put just the hose onto the carb and leave it open on the other end that alone cuts done the way it runs quite a bit. kinda weird... ideas
thanks for the help
