G1 Gas Project slow difficult starting
I picked up an 86 G1 3 years ago and am now getting around to getting it going. Has 84 engine. First cleaned up cart , pressure cleaned and touched up paint, looks good. Next cleaned out fuel system, tank, lines etc.. Cleaned out oil system, same as fuel. Mixed up some premix around 100:1 ( so i could run and check oil system operation). Changed coil and plug, has good spark.
Try starting with air box off carb, won't start. Filled a sqeeze bottle with premix and crank and shot gas in. Engine comes up in speed but not running on it its own( have primary belt off). Crank engine and repeat with shooting in gas while choking and fiddling around with accellarator pedal. After abit of time engine slowly picks up speed and clutch kicks in and engine runs even up to full throttle, runs about 3 mins and I bring it down in speed and it stalls out. Tried refiring no luck. Remove carb, dissassemble and clean out all passages, reassemble and install. After about 5 mins of trying to start it slowly( real slow) comes up to power and runs. Run about 10 mins to get hot and try to bring it down towards idle or lower speed and it craps out. Again it will not restart. I do have crud build up around crankseals and I have a large exhaust leak at butterfly shaft near the head. I have yet to try a compression check but will tomorrow. Anybody have any thoughts. I have read many threads about the crank seals but not being a 2 cycle xspert I was wondering how the leakage effects the engine. Anybody has some input please chime in, I am all ears. THX |

Re: G1 Gas Project slow difficult starting
Crank shaft seals are most important to assure proper pressures to operate the fuel pump. To test for leaky seals try to start the engine and spray starting fluid behind the clutch assembly if is runs you have a seal problem. recomend you to replace both seals and its not a hard task. Though the exaust leak is a issue some poor performance can be regained if the back pressure was regained.

Re: G1 Gas Project slow difficult starting
Thanks - I feel both seals and exhaust are holding me back, does this starting problem sound like symtoms of these anomalies? I still need to track down a compression tester and check out the top end as well for more clues.

Re: G1 Gas Project slow difficult starting
I'm wondering... will a compression test show bad seals ? I can 'see' it testing the piston, rings, head, etc. , but i'm not sure if it'll tell about the crankcase seals. The 'valves' are nothing more than ports ( holes in the cylinder walls) , so once they're closed, I dont see the compression check backing up into the crankcase. See what I mean ? I'm just curious...
thanks, jeff |

Re: G1 Gas Project slow difficult starting
No I was unclear, I wanna check the top end. I think I have a bad top end and bad crank seals as 2 problems at once.

Re: G1 Gas Project slow difficult starting
Did compression test and it's not looking good... So I think I am going to do the top end and crank seals.

Re: G1 Gas Project slow difficult starting
As long as your in there for the seals it only makes sence to do the top end as well. As far as the compression test it would not in any way test the seals condition. The hardest part would be getting the clutch off for it requires a tool designed for this task. If any one needs seals I have a few spares for G1,s

Re: G1 Gas Project slow difficult starting
Thx - I will proceed with removing engine and teardown. I will do top end and crankseals at the same time.
