Question G2A Engine running bad after modification

1988 G2A with governor removed and the igniter with rev limiter was replaced with a mopar automotive ignition. I have adjusted my foot pedal just shy of full throttle so I don't over rev the engine. When I try to run in the upper range of the RPM the engine boggs down as if to much gas or not enough gas. I am assuming the engine is running to lean because the spark plug is not wet when I examine it. Can anyone give me some advice. Does the carb need to be re-jetted? When I run the engine static in my shop with air box removed I get gas spitting from the inlet of the carb at the higher range of RPM. Compression good, new spark plug and value clearance checked. HELP!

The gas spitting is normal, they are designed to have the airbox and hose on them which changes the airflow. It will run lean if you change the airbox, it leaks, or you change the exhaust. Usually you can pull the choke on maybe 1/8-1/4 the way at full throttle and if it runs better you are lean. I dunno about the ignition, there are threads here say it works great. The stock ignition retards the timing to 0 degrees at idle and about 30 advance at 2500 and up, I have not found a box that does that.

The mopar thing I can't help you with, except, that may likely be the problem. All carbs have a fuel fog above the venturi in the upper RPM ranges. That's normal. (And neat ta watch on a dyno!!)

G2's are very picky about air/fuel mixture. I lifted my G2 and didn't put the air box back on just ran an open filter. Couldn't get more then 7mph out of it with 24" tires. Put the air box back on (well a different one since I stupidly sold it before I finished my lift) and shot right up to over 30mph and will spin tires on anything that's not asphalt.
