Default G9 back firing and sputtering

I just picked up this gem

At the sellers house it fired up and drove just fine. I drove it for about 10 minutes and all was fine.
I get it home and now it just sputters and backfires...

Any suggestions as to what I can do to get her to run nicely?

I looked on that yamaha timeline and it looks like a 1991 G9. But I could be wrong...

Anyhow I drove it slowly for about 20 minutes and it didn't backfire or stall anymore, after it got really warmed up I was able to drive it faster.

Start with general maint. Clean the air filter, and during reassembly, make sure there are no air leaks. usually the 4 straps that hold the top on are broken or missing. The top being warped is a common issue also. Has to be put back together correctly to run. Grease clutches (but read how before you do it). Check oil in motor and tranny as well. Then change.

Then start reading this site, you will learn tons on how to make it run perfect.

Then ENJOY!!

Thanks Mike, I've been scouring this site as much as I can.
I'm hoping it doesnt have a problem with the ignitor.. that would be expensive!
I ordered a new spark plug based on my reading on here, and some seafoam spray.
Today when i get home from work I'll give the engine a more thorough look.

I've already earmarked some funds for a 4" lift kit :D
and hopefully i can find some nice wheels and tires for it in time

http://bakersfield.craigslist.org/sno/4105973262.html

Would these tires & rims be good on my cart or would they vibrate it to pieces?
Also would they fit with 4" lift kit?
The price is perfect.....

27 inches is way to tall for a stock motor. Make the car run perfect first. Then think about hot ridding it.

Thanks Mike... i was looking at all the other builds and havent noticed any that big.. lol..

but you're right that would be over kill.

I've been reading everything related to the G9 and trying to educate myself about it.
already ordered a fuel filter and air filter, found out how to drain the transmission & engine oil.. lol....
i'm going to try and get it nicely tuned up.
also i didnt like all the accessory wires that whoever had before it wired up.. they look like sh!t... so i'm going to rewire all that is necessary and take out all the junk.

I did notice that on my gas tank there is a big hole on top, and was watching a video on G9 maintenance, i noticed that there should be a hose going from there to somewhere else. can anyone confirm what and where that hose would go.

thanks once again

Good move!! The. Best thing you can do is read the site. I think your car is a G2 tho. White steering column. Still close to a G9!! Same motor as a G8.
