Default Newbie ?s about G9

Ok, I would like to do a few service details to my G9 and I have scanned through the service manual and on here with out any luck.

I would like to check the transmission oil level, but i do not notice any dipstick or any way of checking the oil contents.
Would anyone be so kind as to point me in the right direction as to where to check the oil level, and it probably would be best if i were to just drain it & replace with fresh oil, can you recommend the type and quantity of oil.

For the air intake, the original air box seems soo huge and clunky. I pulled it apart and cleaned it, but I am wondering if in the 20+ years since this cart was made, if there are any better air intakes I could possibly replace the stock assembly with?

Another newbie question, if I wanted to run the engine, what would be the best procedure for not having it drive away lol, should I jack the rear end up off the ground?

Thank you in advance

Not sure about the G9 rear end--but the engine is 1qt 10w-30.

A stock Yamaha will run best with the stock air box and filter, properly sealed to prevent unwanted air intake.

Yes, jack up the rear end when testing.

You could always put it in neutral to run the engine!

Cart was engineered to be like it is, if you change the airbox you need to rejet the carb, even a leak in the top will cause most of them to have issues or foul plugs. It was made to be quiet and go long spans between services. You can change it but don't expect it to run much different after you fix jetting, I did mine and it did not run much different that I could tell.

Most older yamaha have a rubber plug and vent line in the side of the trans, driver side, you pull that out to check oil level or add more. There is a drain in the bottom or use bottom bolt.

You can shift it to between F and R for neutral, but take care as the shifter is not designed to stay there it could move but they usually don't.

Thank you kindly.
I was going to ask another question about the gas filter but it was already answered...

on another note, dang this golf cart is fun to ride around on!
lol... i feel like a little kid! :D

I can hardly wait to get it tuned up properly, put a 4" lift on it & some knobby off road tires...
but first thing is the engine...

I would get that gas tank vent replaced first. Dont let there be a spark under there when the seats down. It wont be nice.

There is a drain plug at the bottom, and an identical fill level plug about 1/3 the way up and at the back of the axle, facing the same direction as the drain plug, fill until gear oil starts coming ot the fill plug hole. You can remove the vent for a bigger hole to fill through (fill plug is barely bigger than a pen, that will be Slow to fill through). G2/G9 is a great cart to start out with, reliable, and parts mostly still available. I have one of each, actually 2 G2s, and a G9, theyre almost identical. Personally, i wouldnt own any gas cart, but a Yamaha.

Use regular 80w 90 gear oil. Red circle is around "fill level plug", green circle is around "vent tube". Drain plug not shown in pic (it's at bottom). Yeah, its nasty dirty, i drive it to work every day, rallye it in the desert, ect. It only gets a bath when im gonna service it. If you take the vent out to fill through, just replace it (about $6), if its original, the rubber is gonna be hard as a rock. My opinion on the air box is, Just leave it alone, but do make sure its seal is good, rubber hooks are all there (4), and good.. I tried a k&n adapted on to it, ran like total crap, its a 1cyl engine, and can use a little restriction in the air intake. Dont believe me, then try this. Take the airbox and tube off, and run it in neutral, it will literally be spitting fuel out the inlet end of the carb. I gave that k&n to my buddy with a G1, because of its reed valves, it loves it (and sounds cool too). The trans is pretty much bulletproof in your G9, and with a little clutch work, it can pull heavy duty work (like dragging cars around). Only thing i wish was available is a Posi diff for it. If you want clutch upgrade info, or maintainence tips, just ask. I, and plenty of others will glady assist.
