G1 bearing clutch side
Well I got the old seal out clutch side. It was in bad shape.. BUT when the seal came out, a little black piece of bakelite material came out also. It is a little piece that keeps the ball bearings separated.. So 2 balls can touch each other.. will that hurt, or will the other balls finally break & come apart too.. The shop here want $200 plus to replace it if I just bring the motor in, & take it out of the golf cart, $300 plus if they take the motor out.. I'm on a pension & can't really afford that.
How big a job is it if I pull the motor & put it on a bench & replace the bearing & seal..??? I could then replace the fan side seal also while on the bench.. Are there any special tools needed to replace the bearing?? Or should I just replace the seal & use it as is with the 2 balls (no pun intended), floating freely.?? Incidentally I tried to put the little piece back in between the 2 balls, but it won't stay.. It looks like it has been broken for awhile, because the inside of the seal was all scored up from it. Thanks in advance for any help.. |

Re: G1 bearing clutch side
i would say you have to replace it, the ball bearings are not suppose to touch each other...as the back side of the first bearing is traveling in one direction the other bearings front side is traveling in the other direction, ....you don't live near sarnia ont canada do you? I would help ya do it, i just finished a 1982 G1 engine, and it was alittle crazy but, i just fired it up yesterday and so far so good.

Re: G1 bearing clutch side
Thank you so much for your offer. I live in Prince Albert Sask, but we are in an RV park in Donna Texas. so my tools here are limited, but I have enough access to any tools I need. Would it be hard to split the cases & take the bearings off the shaft & out of the case?? The only heat I have is a propane torch..
I may have to take the motor off & take it home where I have an acetelyne outfit. |

Re: G1 bearing clutch side
Pull the engine and try, for the price of gas to drive that far you could pay a shop to do the seals.

Re: G1 bearing clutch side
Can you post a picture of the bearing problem? Useually bearings have a steel "cage" for the bearings.

Re: G1 bearing clutch side
Yes, but this one has a black bake lite material (don't know the actual composition) separating the bearings. Any others I have seen had a steel cage in there. One piece broke out for some reason, & then the 2 balls float & touch each other. I will try to get a pic, but hard to do with my cheapie camera.. I'll go out now & try to get a picture..

Re: G1 bearing clutch side
OK I hope it comes through. At the top is where the little black bearing separator came out of..

Re: G1 bearing clutch side
Yes, I call it bake lite, don't know if there's another name for it.. looks like the same stuff on some old cookware my wife has. I got the motor out of the cart.
Not sure what year my golf cart is, but I'm just assuming it's an early 80's or late 70's. |
