G16 Gas in Oil (Photos)
Hello, I just bought a 2000 G16 from a small golf course. I simply picked the cart that took off and ran the best. (11 available to pick from)
Have had cart for a week and the cart runs great but I smell gas while driving it, I have no leaks anywhere in the cart. I have read countless posts on this forum and learned to give the oil a smell, I did indeed smell the oil and it did smell of gas, it did not overflow nor was it over filled. I have attached pic of what oil looked like, it was about 1 qt worth of oil. I read here that 99% of the time it is due to float sticking in carb, second reason would be gas getting in oil from suction line from pump to oil. I took my carb apart and nothing seemed to stick, cleaned anyway and put back together. I took the bottom hose off the pump which leads to the oil, I blew with my mouth in the hose and there was fluid in the hose, not much but some as I could feel it blow out of the hose and in to oil reservoir and then the hose was clear, is there supposed to be fluid in this hose? I assume it was gas? I have 3 questions after my actions tonight: Is the float installed correctly, this is how it was installed when I took bowl off? (photo) When hooking carb back up the throttle link on the carb opens slowly and does not open all the way, I'd say only about 1/2 to 3/4, not wide open....did I screw something up when putting carb back on or is this normal? Lastly, is there supposed to be fluid in the suction line on the bottom of the fuel pump? I assume I have a bad diaphragm which is allowing gas to get in my oil? I don't want to buy a new carb if I can rule it a pump issue. Thanks for any advice, this is a great site that I will be using often. |

Bad fuel pump diaphram. Replace the pump. Gasoline is going right into the crankcase.

Thanks for the reply, I got one on order
Anyone know about if the throttle is supposed to open all the way or only 3/4? mine opens slowly and only about 3/4 when pushing down gas. I'm new to this stuff. Thx |

If the engine is not running, the throttle should go wide open. When the engine runs, the governor will pull the throttle back as it approaches the set speed.

Re: G16 Gas in Oil (Photos)
Update. Installed new pump and changed oil twice. Ran for about a week and still very strong gas smell in oil? My oil level is the same as I put in, appears small amount of gas is getting in somewhere, or maybe even vapor, any thoughts? My air hose from oil to pump still has very small amount of liquid in it when I blow from the pump end not sure if its gas now since new pump, maybe condensation? Any help would be appreciated, thx

Re: G16 Gas in Oil (Photos)
It could be coming in from the combustion chamber. I had a float that would stick on a piece of equipment. If you didn't turn the fuel valve off, it would flood from transport. On occasion it hydro-locked the cylinder. It was the carb float needle, needed replaced. It flooded daily, would be hard to start, and the oil was thin and smelled like fuel. Changed the carb. Problem went away.
You did the right thing replacing the pump first. Also check all your fuel lines, make sure they are soft and clean. You'll get to the bottom of it. Sometimes you just have to replace things to find the answer. |

Hard to tell from the angle but the float seems to be set a little high.

Re: G16 Gas in Oil (Photos)
I cleaned the carb prior to replacing the pump, I think I will grab a new carb though, will post back.
Out of curiosity if my needle was sticking wouldn't it be a large amount of gas getting in or could it be just a small amount, I am only having a small amount because my oil level is not changing when I drain, putting in qt and getting qt out. I have read if float is sticking it would be large amount actually over flowing oil res? Thanks again for input |
