2006 G22 Gas Cart Hard to shift into Forward when cold

Hello seems i have a little problem with getting the cart to go forward. Just wondering if its too cold for this golf cart. Heres the problem when i put the cart away for winter everything worked fine. Well waterpump went out in my vehicle so i had to move cart out of garage. Its very cold outside cart fired right up went into reverse drove it out of garage well idecided to take it for a spin put it in forward sounded like a lot of grinding well i let off the gas them it seemed to catch restarted and cart took off forward so i changed it back to reverse no problems but when going back into forward same problem a little grind then it would catch and take off again im wondering if its just the cold weather or not please help weather here in wisconsin is about 5-10 degress right now please help thanks

May be the shift cable has moisture and

DOOm's is right on. There are "cable injector lubers" that you can squirt lubricant into the cables, but at 5-10 degrees, they just weren't ment for those conditions.

The cables are just fine the shifter knob moves back and forth quite easy. It just seems like the tranny is not shifting into forward like it gets stuck part way maybe a litttle cold for the transmission. will check out when warmer though to see if its doing same thing

According to the manual, you're not supposed to shift from forward to reverse with the cart moving or the engine running. I've had similar issues with the gear making a "racheting" sound if shifted while the pulleys are turning. Never had an issues if everything is stopped. You also have to consider that the cold temp have thickened the rear gear lube to the consistency of molasses. It will slow down the shift action, and while you are passing through neutral, the pulleys will start turning if the engine is running, and that makes it tougher to shift without grinding.

Yeah, my G2 rear does the same thing. It's 3 degrees here, and it makes that sound. Frozen gear lube. Heck that stuff flows slowly when it's 80 out, think of what it looks like at 3 degrees? Prob like peanut butter LOL. I even used synthetic stuff the last time. If it gets up to 15 it's good to go, at least no sound.

thanks for the info i always shift when cart is fully stopped never shift from reverse to forward on the fly other day temps warmed up and took it for a spin snow was out there and had a lot of fun on it no shifting problems im happy with the speed of 18 mph but i need some more toque and maybe posi but that will be it for me

I'm with ya. I just tried plowing snow with mine. Forward working fine. Reverse wasn't catching. Pulled into me heated garage & reverse started working again. Went back out & the same thing happened. It's about 5 degrees here too. I tightened the reverse cable a bit, seemed to work for a minute then same thing happened. Gotta be the gear lube turning to molasses. Maybe I'll try a thinner oil for the winter? Works fine in the garage til I go outside. And in stopping completely too before shifting.

Yeah I've heard you can use motor oil if you aren't doing too much driving with it. If you are just going out to the mailbox and back, I'd say thinner oil would be ok, but plowing? I don't know. Better off just warming up the oil. You could try an engine block heater. I've seen guys use those for atv's. The one I've seen is a little dipstick heater that plug in. It sounds like a lot of trouble, but think of the damage you could be doing with the gears grinding etc?

Ya, I drove it all summer with no issues. First time in the cold & it won't shift properly. As soon as I got it jacked up in the heated garage to investigate, it started working again. Took it back outside & sane thing happened. Lubed both ends of both shifting cables. Tightened the reverse cable, not sure what else to do. I was worried about plowing snow with the "one wheel drive", but it worked fine except for the reverse issue. I let ya know what I find out. Got a call into a guy. Waiting for him to call me back.
