Default Yamaha g1 project...

I pulled the g1 into the shop today. The number on the rear frame is j10-040139. The guy I got it from told me one of the solonoids are out. so I put a battery in and put the keyswitch in forward. pushed the pedal and the motor started to turn. I put the switch in reverse and pushed the pedal and the motor would not turn over. It just kinda grunts. It does try to turn over but wont fully turn over. Where should I start to test this? can the solonoid be rebuilt or does it have to be replaced? thanks for all the help.

It's pretty easy to replace one, but I've never rebuilt one. There are kits available. I've seen some people switch the solenoids, reverse them, to check if that's the problem, that's pretty easy to do. Just make sure you label your wires, make a diagram, or take a photo. This way you can always put it back the way it was.

PM sent.

How would I go about testing the solenoids?

The easiest way to check it is the measure the voltage between A1 and A2 on the starter. In forward, it will be one polarity, in reverse, it will be the opposite polarity. It should be ~12vdc.
Are you able to read wiring diagrams? I have marked up the diagram to show +/- in forward, reverse, and no pedal. I can post them if they would help.

Make sure all connections are clean and tight, and really tight. Bought a g1 that wouldnt even turn over. Checked wireing, cleand connections, got some action but wouldnt turn over. Went back over eveything and really made sure stuff was clean and really tight and she turns over like new now.

okay with the switch in the off position if I put the positive on a1 or a2 and the ground it shows 12 volt. if I turn the switch to forward it shows the same until I push the pedal then a2 drops voltage to just under 9 volts and the a1 drops to zero volts and the motor starts. if I put the switch in Reverse and check the voltage on both a1 and a 2 the voltage spikes the meter showing a number 1. it's also buzzing the reverse buzzer. I'm using a digital voltmeter to test this. if I push the pedal while in Reverse the motor tries to start but will not turn over.

Put your meter on a manual range of at least 20 volts and try reverse again.

I have been looking at a few things. I took the cable off the solenoid that goes to a2. I put the volt meter on the cable and it shows 12vt. I put the voltmeter on the solenoid where the cable is suppose to go and it also shows 12vts. Why is that? If I remove the cable going to a1 from the other solenoid (both are off the solenoids at this point) then both lines have no voltage. but both solenoids where the lines go have 12vts. im totally lost....

Also if I leave either line off either solenoid the cart will not try to start at all.

one more thing....when everything is connected and I put the key in reverse the backup buzzer buzzes and when I push the pedal down it tries to turn the engine over but cant and I noticed the bolt where the line from a2 is connected on the solenoid is smoking a bit like its heating up.
