Hooking up accessories through the ignition switch ?

I would like to hook up my headlights and stereo through the ignition switch .I can only find one hot wire coming out of the switch and it is only has power going to it when the gas pedal is pushed.When you let off the pedal the headlights go out.
Is there a different switch I can get that will have an extra wire that I need ?
BTW: This is on a G-1
What has everyone else done ? I know the guys with stereos don't have the tunes quit when they let off the gas pedal .

I took a wire straight from battery to fuse block then went to all accessories

I hook all my accessories (all but stereo: don't have one on the cart) to toggle switches and ground everything to the neg. post of the battery. Be sure to ground to the neg. post on Yamaha's. If not, it will blow the main fuse almost everytime. Some stereos will actually drain your battery if it sits for long periods of time. Due to the memory power lead on the stereo. Just something to think about when hooking it up. I would hook the radio up to the hot side ignition wire and then ground to neg. on battery.

I still would like to run it off the ignition which and to a wire that is hot all the time the ignition which is turned on but only when the switch is on.I have kids that drive the cart also and I know they will leave the stereo on and drain the battery.

Just take a test light and splice it in to the one on the ignition switch that is only hot when the key is turned. Should be fine. I don't know the exact wire on a G1 without looking it up. Could probably check it out on the Yamaha site: link below in my sig.

Well, I could be mistaken…but I don’t think the hot wire on the ignition circuit is “heavy enough” to run lights and stuff.

I would advise running the “juice” through a relay that is energized when the ignition switch is turned on. That way whatever is connected to the circuit the relay is on will only work when the ignition switch is on.

I agree. Run the lights on its own toggle switch run straight to the battery (my opinion). I wouldn't hook lights to anything. They usually draw too much current.

Well, I downloaded the wiring diagram for the G1 and have been looking at it for a bit....

Having no hands-on knowledge of the G1 wiring...the schematic looks like a nightmare.
Since the G1 Ignition Key is also the Forward/Revese selector, I am unsure where to advise you to pull a "switched DC" voltage from. If you poke around with a multi-meter, you may be able to find a good point to attach the sense wires for your relay.

Barring that, and unless you are pretty savy (electrically speaking), I'd agree with Spriddle's advice to go with a toggle swich from the battery.

I used the reverse buzzer hot wire. Originally, only live in reverse with engine running, I flipped the for/rev wires so accessories work in forward only with engine running.

I have a 1989 yammy G2. want to hook up all the cool toys ( cig. lighter for spotlights and other 12v stuff, Driving lights, and stereo) I am so-so on elctric stuff so anything close to a step-by-step instruction would be awesome!!!!! I ran my driving lights on my 4-wheeler straight to my battery, grounded to my frame and that wasn't so hard. Thanks for any and all help! Great forum!!!!!!!
