G2 Cold Start Finally Fixed
I am a new registered user, but I have been using this forum as a tool to help with my poorly running 1990 G2.
Bought the car used with a six inch lift kit and factory wired lights. Almost from the start, the car would run well, but was hard to start or would stall and become hard to start. Very unpredictable. Some days it was fine, others it took ten minutes to get it going. From tips within this forum, here is what have done. Removed and inspected / cleaned air filter. (no change) Changed the gas. Added new gas with gas treatment. (no change) Changed spark plug. (no change) Downloaded owner's manual and re-set carb settings to factory. (better running performance but no change in the starting) Replaced battery. (initially, better starts, then back to unreliability issues) Removed fuel hoses to check filter flow. Drained 2 gallons without interruption. (no change) Adjusted the carb settings to try and tune the settings, removed and cleaned carb, checked jets. (no change) Replaced solenoid. (much better running, not better starts) Replaced coil. (much better starting performance, engine runs rough until warm) Once it started consitently, re-adjusted carb settings. 1 and 3/4 turns out on main, two and 1/2 turns in on idle. Runs smooth, eliminated the smell of fuel through exhaust, no back fires. So, that is where I am at. The cart is much more reliable and fun to drive. I have read on this site that Yamahas are known as hard starters. (we have a 4 stroke TTR 125 and it is hard to start as well) Even after these changes can sometimes take two or three presses on accelerator to get it started. Maybe 30 seconds at most. Much better than 10 minutes. There are a bunch of people who post on this forum and they have very helpful. Thanks to Gary, Spriddle, ic746 and all the others who give solid info. My thought on this is I should have started with the coil. I think everything I did was still needed, but it seems like the coil and solenoid are the key areas to start with. The solenoid was $46 online plus shipping and the coli was $26. Not too much to put out to get this thing running. Thanks! |

Re: G2 Cold Start Finally Fixed
Good to hear. I have had quite a time with my 86 G2. Mine was rough idle. Got that corrected but still have that gas smell. I am going to try your carb adjustments.
