Make sure the air box is completely sealed, no cracks in the spacer between carb. and intake, and double check your throttle on the carb. to make sure it is completely closing when you let off the gas pedal. Check to make sure the little return spring is not missing that holds the throttle shut on the carb.

Yamaha's are very picky when it comes to air leaks, fuel lines, and throttle closed position on the carb. If it runs better with the choke open, more than likely it is an air leak where the top of the air box isn't sealed completely. Be sure to check your throttle to make sure it is closing all the way when you let off the gas. If it doesn't close all the way, it will backfire. It may also need a valve adjustment.

Guy's..you may think i've lost my mind............Headwrench, are you saying this only happens in reverse ? If so...2 things. First..unplug your back up buzzer (weather it works or not) Second...some G8's had a added fuse off the negative battery cable at the starter/generator into the wire harness. If so check to see if your fuse is blown. Let us know. Later dave

my fault. maybe i was not clear enough. it started running really bad after the pop through the carb, forward or reverse. it runs a little better with the breather tube off, which is the way i am running it now, but not like it should. could the pop have bent the carb float ? i am getting ready to update the cart with paint & bling & would like to get the motor issues handled first. thanks guys. this is why i like this site, everybody is very willing to help a dumb new guy.
