Yamaha G9 headlight question
Acquired a G9 recently and installed the "Strech Plastics" headlight kit which I think is the only one available for these older Yamaha's.
Install went OK and the headlights and tail lights illuminate except for the 2 amber lights located outboard of each headlight. These are supposed to come on with HL's aren't they ? If so, what could I be missing ? The amber lights each had their own red wire and black wire protruding from the back. The red wire had a barrel connector on its end so I hooked it up with the only other wire with the matching barrel connector. The black wire was mounted to the frame. This was done for both amber light but still nothing. Any ideas ? |

Re: Yamaha G9 headlight question
ALL GROUNDS go back to battery ground, to start with. (Black wires).

Re: Yamaha G9 headlight question
No amber lights unless turnsignals are present. If you want them to work, you will have to hook them to the headlamp circuit. And once again, NO FRAME GROUNDS.

Re: Yamaha G9 headlight question
Ok, I thought turn signals may have something with those but wasn't sure. It'd been nice if the light kit manufacturer had included some decent instructions. I guess I'll hook them into the HL circuit.
I knew about the NO FRAME ground which is why the main power and ground wires went straight to the battery but I figured it'd be ok to ground those 2 little amber lights to the frame. However, I'll reroute those back to the NEG post too. Thanks guys ! |

Re: Yamaha G9 headlight question
I installed a head light last week and have had no problems so far, I did take a wire wheel and removed the paint where it is attached to the frame. I did bring the battery charger out to the camper as I know that one weekend the battery will be drained

Re: Yamaha G9 headlight question
The "no frame grounds" thing comes from electric carts with a motor controller, so no stray voltages can make their way into the controller. I had that rule drilled into my head so much when i started doing golfcarts, i just apply the rule to every cart. There are a few carts that did use frame grounds from the factory(ezgo gas & clubcar gas comes to mind).

Re: Yamaha G9 headlight question
Overall, the electrical circuit is better with no frame grounds. Think of a trailer, alot of trailers would use the ball and hitch as the ground. This worked fine to some degree if the trailer was towed every week and the ball was rubbed clean often. Go without towing the trailer for a little while and the ball rusts up. Hook the trailer up and start fighting the lights to get them to work. In the end, bad ground.
Even cleaning the frame can still lead to corrosion at the terminal and frame. Then your back to fighting grounding issues. Two dissimilar metals will start to corrode (anode faster than the cathode), thus causing a poor connection and a place for corrosion to build up from the loose connection. Always come directly back to the battery. Yes it takes more wire, but will save many of headaches later on in troubleshooting. It is not a matter of if, it's a matter of when a problem will need to be toubleshooted with a frame ground circuit. |
