Your better off to buy an over sized piston and ring set. Just buy J10 oversized piston/rings and gaskets and have the J17 cylinder bored. The J17 reed assy/manifold/carberator would all need to be changed if you went with a J10 cylinder. I would suggest when rebuilding the top end to change the cranks seals, or you'll be tearing it apart again after all that new found compression. Good luck with your rebuild!

Genuine Yamaha parts made in Japan are much better quality than the aftermarket Chinese stuff. Most of the lower priced kits you find are China made. I'd do what smallblock says, use the orig cyl and have it bored, invest in Yamaha brand piston and rings and even seals.

the golf cart place said they can not bore the cylinder out because it is too messed up should I bring it some where else to see if they can do it. Everything is different on the j17 my 1st gas golf cart and it had to be a 1982 my luck

If it has never been bored out before, it should have more than one rebuild left in it. Did you have a catastrophic failure (broken rod, ect) that put huge gouges in the cylinder? I agree, the genuine Yamaha parts are almost always far superior to the "china" stuff.

Clean up the top of the piston, it will be stamped "std" or other increments. I agree, unless there are deep gouges in the cylider bore, the machinest doesn't have enough info to diagnoss.
