G1 No Top end speeed, please help
Hi there, just picked up a G1 with a motor that just has been rebuilt, got it runs real good has good take off but no top end seems sluggish.. Found out it was missing the linkage for the exhaust(which I added) also he said he is running oil/gas mix says the oil pump is shot. Just wondering why I have no speed. Any help would be appreciated . thanks, Bryan

Sounds like the Pipe might be stopped up, loosen the pipe at the head and see if it runs better. how fast does it go. maybe the pistion is installed the wrong way

Re: G1 No Top end speeed, please help
Could be a lot that causes lack of top end speed. First check the governor. At the golf courses they were set to run 12 mph, which feels pretty slow to me. If it won't even go that fast, look for the basics. Check your air filter, fuel filter, spark plug, drive belt first.
Then do as Rib says and check the muffler. The G1 muffler will clog up pretty quickly if too much oil is used. What premix ratio was being used? The oil pump mixed at a ratio of 150:1 (according to the service manual), so anything more is considered oil rich. These engines don't run hot or fast enough to merit more oil, although I ran 80:1 for two years and then ran 100:1 for almost a year, with no engine wear beyond the norm. Then look to the clutches. Look at the sheave faces for "dished out" wear. This is when there is a severe wear mark and a "hump" present. The sheaves should be true and straight. Disassemble the primary, inspect, clean, and lube very lightly. Check the plastic ramp buttons on the secondary and make sure the inner sheave moves freely. Report back. |

Re: G1 No Top end speeed, please help
Well after playing with it all day. The guy jimmy rigged the throttle cable..... so I put a new cable and pedal off another G1 I have . But my problem now is it revs way to high. How do I adjust the governer? Thanks bryan. Motor runs strong just needs to be slowed down as u can tell it wants to over rev

Can you post a pic of what you have for linkages so we can see if it is all stock?

So, let me see if I understand. If you step on the gas it accelerates, correct? So is the problem that it doesn't slow down when you let off the accelerator?

The cart has good get up and go and has speed but its like it hits a certain speed and stays at that speed but the motor still sounds like there's more(like over rev)

Re: G1 No Top end speeed, please help
Sorry, just not understanding. Over rev, to me, is when you miss a shift on a manual transmission and you rev the engine past the redline. Is this thing slipping out of gear?
If it's running good, has good acceleration, and goes 25-30 mph on the top end....then it's doing well. That's where you need to be. If it's feeling like it's taking a long time to get up to top speed, then there's a problem. If it will only go 15-20 mph, there's an issue with the governor or the carb. Put the cart up on jack stands, rev the engine up and check the clutches. If both clutches operate smoothly, and the engine doesn't bog or miss, then you should be good. Belt condition will affect performance too, so if the belt is old, get a new one. |
