Default G1 Steering

I know this has been addressed, but cannot find it!

There seems to be an "excessive" amount of play in steering (1/4 turn at least). I don't know if I should start with steering box, the nut at the bottom, or maybe new king pins. Any ideas?

I would adjust the screw on the steering box.

On mine the nut holding the Pitman arm to the steering box shaft was not tight. I had a lot of play in the steering wheel, after tightening that nut there is none.

There is an adjustment on the steering box.... I would start there. Also a lot of people pack the steering box with grease instead of oil. I have done this to both of my G1s and it did help with some of the play.

Last week I ended up pulling the pitman arm off of the steering box because it was getting loose again. The splines in the arm were worn so I applied Loctite liquid metal to the splines in the arm and on the shaft. Reassembled them a let them set for 24 hours. Now everything is nice and smooth with no slack in the steering. Loctite has a good reputation so I hope it holds up.
