I would think regular oil on break in to set the rings then switch oil

Sorry just kidding you. Use conventional oil when breaking in the engine, then you can switch to synthetic oil after it's fully broken in. Some believe that synthetic is too "slippery" to use during break-in, need more friction to seat the rings.

To break the engine in, first idle the engine up to operating temp, then rev to 2k then to idle, then to 3k then to idle, then to 4k then to idle, holding at the specified rpm level for 1-2 minutes, repeat each step 3-5 times. Then take it on an extended ride. Change the oil. Ride away!

Synthetic oil coats everything, and on a new engine it prevents the rings from seating, which will result in a smoker of an engine.Always run atleast a tank or 2 of fuel before changing to synthetics. I always do my initial fireup, tune, and break-in procedure, then change the oil,run 1-2 tanks(depending on application),then switch over to synthetic. Hope this helps.

I break in all engines with the same oil I am going to run, Granted I have only built 1 cart engine but I broke it in with synthetic, It is a myth that engines won't break in with synthetic, just think all new cars come from the factory with synthetic oils in all the components and they run and break in just fine.

Call it a myth if you want, but i have alot of friends that own or work for engine shops, and every one of them will tell you the same thing.Companies like Jasper Engines wont cover the warranty if it isnt run something like 5k(been a while, dont remember he exact number) before switching to synthetics. The point of synthetics is reduced wear and friction, new engines need that wear and friction to seat the rings, bearings, and cam/lifters.
