Default G9 help needed

I've read so much I think I'm confused
I have a G9 that I cant keep running. I rebuilt the motor a couple of years ago (with help from members, thank you so much) had to punch it do to a egg shaped cylinder. Now its draining batteries. I've checked the red and a green wires at starter/generator and at the 4 prong plug at voltage regulator. 5 ohm at s/g, 5.3 at plug. Getting 15.5 to 16.6 volts at battery at 3/4 throttle. Is there something else I can do before dropping $100 for a regulator.

Just put the meter on the battery to see what its doing. If its draining you have a short or something is on all the time. 12.5v is typical of a battery charged and sitting. It should go higher running and up to charge voltage of around 13-14 at higher engine rpm. 15 or more is too much charge unless its -50F there it will boil the battery out, or you have a faulty meter. Check the wiring that is common issue, check all the ground wires everything has ground wiring it is not like a car to the frame. Very common to have bad connections! Check the sticky threads above for electrical issues also if you missed them. If I remember right, the VR looks at the battery and if it sees 12v or less it sends 12v to the generator field, that causes it to generate power and charge. When it sees over 13.5 or so it cuts that power and it stops generating. The small wires in the side of the gen are the field. Also note if the VR can't 'see' the battery right due to wiring issue then it may act strange. The gen can't make full power until maybe 2500 rpm or more, so at idle rpm it will not generate much at all even if there is a load on it.
