G1 runs well, but slight pop/cough when first stepping on gas
I recently rebuilt the top end in my 89 G1 (honed head, new piston and rings), and turned the reed valves around just for kicks.
I put on a new muffler, and replaced both crank seals. The cart run nicely now, but when you step back on the gas while rolling (like after coasting for a second, or just lifting off the throttle), there is a slight 'pop' or cough or hiccup ... not quite a backfire ... as you re-apply the gas. I've fiddled with the a/f ratio, and it doesn't matter, and the timing is right in the middle of the tabs on the magneto marks. My air filter is clean, and the airbox seems OK. Any ideas? |

I probably need to look more closely at the airbox ... maybe spray some carb cleaner around it to see if it's leaking?
I don't know why airbox leaks would matter, though. |
