G16 need to pump gas to get initial start
OK, 96 G16A, when trying to get moving if I push all the way down on pedal sometimes I get nothing, and have to pump the pedal to get it going and usually get movement at about half throttle. Once running it is fine, but it's the initial movement. From reading some other posts wonder if it's an accelerator cable but really don't know. All is stock, except I used a zip tie to bypass governor, which wonder if that is the problem.
Thanks in advance for any advice. |

Re: G16 need to pump gas to get initial start
Suspect a weak battery first. Try fully charging the battery or swap in a known good one and see if the problem goes away. Also a battery load test is recommended. I see this problem posted a lot and here is what I think might be happening:
Weak battery - I think what happens is battery fags when engine hits compression. Pumping the pedal will inch the engine through the compression stroke. Then once the piston is past TDC the starter now has an easier time cranking the engine through exhaust and intake strokes and builds up enough revs to go through the next compression stroke ok. Some other things to check are: make sure all your high current connections in the starter circuit are clean and tight (including the connections to the battery). - Let us know what you find - RAY |

Put charger on and went to crank and kicked right in on neutral. Don't have time to play now but looking like you nailed it stik.
What is best battery to use? Just simple size 24 12v marine? |

Re: G16 need to pump gas to get initial start
Group 24 auto starting battery should be fine (marine or deep cycle not necessary).Make sure terminal polarity matches the old one. Is your old battery bad? Maybe just needs charging and watering! Make sure your starter/generator and voltage regulator are working properly. Should measure between 14.5 and 15.5 volts at battery with engine running at half throttle in neutral. RAY

I would charge and deffinetly load test your battery. You may not have to spend $80. on a batt at this time.

For an update, measured battery running and was reading 14.7. Then did what I should have done and checked water. Nearly 1/2 gallon later,it's full now. Have it on a maintainer and will see what happens. Hopeful that is not shot. Only wish knew how old it was. Looks newer but you know how that goes.
