Towing Trailer with a Yamaha Gas Golf Cart?
I have been very pleased how well the cart tows a trailer. I welded a trailer hitch and wired up lights a while back but have just now got a chance to take advantage of it.
I'd be interested to hear and see pics of what others tow with their golf carts. |

Re: Towing Trailer with a Yamaha Gas Golf Cart?
I use my golf cart to do work around the house. I have done the following....with ease I might add!
*loaded 700 lbs of sod in the back of my dump bed, and dumped it, several times in one day. (approx weight) *towed a 5x10 tube frame steel trailer, with a 1200 lb snowplow in the back (had to weigh at least 2200 lbs total) *towed a 6x8 steel trailer full of firewood (no idea on the weight) *pulled my 8800 lb Duramax truck up my gravel driveway about 100 feet, slightly uphill. (okay, this one wasn't easy, but the cart pulled it!) These golf carts, when properly equipped, can get a lot of work done. There is no doubt that this thing with do as much work as a machine worth 10 times what I have in it. It's really amazing. |

I would be concerned about bending the frame arches over the wheel wells. That tubing isn't that thick.
I set my limit around 600#. |

Re: Towing Trailer with a Yamaha Gas Golf Cart?
One of the first things I did with my stock G14 cart was weld up a trailer hitch on the back. Best thing I ever did to it.
We haul stuff around the yard all the time with it. I built a nice utility trailer out of an old tent trailer frame. Haul dirt, wood, anything. Once, I pulled my flatdeck trailer with 100 - 2x6x16 boards on it. Over 1700 pounds plus the weight of the trailer. I moved it about 100 feet across the yard. It labored a bit, but I kept my speed slow as I knew I would not be able to stop if I moved too fast. I even backed it into a tight space so I could unload the wood and the cart is no worse for wear. I would't be surprised if you could pull a fullsize truck, these carts have a surprising amount of torque. |

It would seem that these carts have abundant pulling power. But I would be concerned with braking. With only brakes on the rear wheels, there might not be enough stopping power if you find yourself going downhill with 1000 lbs on the back.

Re: Towing Trailer with a Yamaha Gas Golf Cart?
I pull lots of stuff, mostly boats up to 150hp and 19'. They will jackknife so be ready to gas it and steer out of it, but mostly me just playing around that causes that lol. Now with the clone engine I can spin the tires and it certainly has more power to tow.
Good point you don't want to put way too much weight on the rear bumper and bend the frame. I have had it almost lift the front end from trailer tongue weight and no damage but I was careful. You don't have to worry about trailer weight because the cart does not have enough power to bend the frame even with a clone engine, but do have to worry about handling issue if you get up any speed. Even 20mph they can get strange if you wheel a hard corner. This cart has always had 22 tires which may have more of this effect. |

Here's what I did with my hitch.....
Basically welded it to frame and rear seat step, then welded a piece of angle for support. |

Re: Towing Trailer with a Yamaha Gas Golf Cart?
Yeah good brakes are essential. I have hydraulic disk on the fronts, which made a big difference with stopping distances, especially when loaded. The hitch I use mounts to the rear 2x4 frame. No it's not the thickest steel in the world, but the tongue weights I have had were no problem. I'm not towing these trailers across town, just around in the yard at 4 mph, no real hills or bumps. I'd think twice if it were rough terrain. A small trailer with a light load, sure. I saw a guy who built a small all terrain trailer like the jeeps use for towing gear/food/beer. This guy had a trailer full of beer. Not sure who was going to drink it all...... I am not a proponent of drinking and off roading by the way. Not a good combo. That's how people get hurt/killed.
