Newbie Here and As a G1 Owner-Need Lots of Tips
Hello all, I've been lurking here a few days while deciding if I should buy this old cart, and took the plunge last night! PO states it was his dad's, who has passed couple of years ago, and was used for the golf course. Seats are rough, body is pretty fair, runs but not consistantly, struggles with cold starts. We drove it around a few laps of the guys big yard, seems to still have good power, but I am sure it needs seals and the carb shaft is just flopping around.
So here is my game plan please feel free to jump in with more/other ideas to get this so it is a reliable cruiser for the wife and kids at our lake house. PO is just sure it is a 1979, but I haven't check the # yet I'm thinking just replace the carb, is there a difference in 78-81 and 83+, I keep finding carbs sold as being 83+ but with the 78-81 part # ?? New tires, stock for now replace Crank seals new plug drain gas, replace all rubber fuel line and vac lines/plugs disable the oiler and run premix, at 80/1? adjust the governor but leave it intact BBQ the muffler Thatch the roof (yes thatch it) Paint the body replace the seats-forklift seat from Northern tool is looking good Add a back seat-guess we will fabricate it? New lights, sound system 1st and foremost I want to get it running smooth and reliable. Starts and goes forward and reverse once it is warm but did lose power after a few minutes, between the seals and the carb shaft it has lots of leakage. I'll post pictures soon, but you guys know what a crusty G1 looks like by now! I welcome all input |

Updated info already!
Just crawled under it, VIN is J31-15XXX which makes it a 1989 model, correct?

Sounds like your definitely on the right track as far as what you want to do with it. I'd suggest doing a compression test on it. You want it to be somewhere around 125 psi.

G1's are nice reliable carts. I like the shorter stance myself, but that's personal preference. I ended up putting a big block in mine and the thing is a beast. Lot of room to work with the flip back rear. Welcome to the joy of rebuilding!

ok, first snag on parts
Trying to order new crankshaft seals and the carb mount. Every part site lists the mount as being for 83-88, nothing about 89, which mine apparently is, but it looks exactly the same, anyone know if it is in fact different? i don't know that it is bad but I just reworking the fuel system completely.

keep figuring out my mistakes
ok, so I guess it is actually an 86-88 model, since the 89 vin starts at j31-1540101 and I have J31-153374, so that solves the carb base issue.
now to wait for parts....investment so far, 300.00 for the cart, 140.00 in parts to get the crankcase sealed and fuel system restored. Guess I'll get to cleaning the next few days while I wait for the parts. Would it be worth the extra effort to pull the engine out since Im doing the seals, carb base and carb? |

Pulling the engine will make the job much easier.

Re: Newbie Here and As a G1 Owner-Need Lots of Tips
Got the motor pulled last night, pretty simple to remove. It was super crusty and wet on the fan side, I didn't get pictures when I removed the cowling from the powerhead, but it was packed with grass and dirt in the fins. Got it all stripped down except for the inner part of the clutch, waiting for the tool to arrive later this week. The fan side was ridiculously oiled and dirty, the magneto cup was packed solid with oily mud. Took an hour to pull the motor and tear it down, 2.5 hours to clean it up reasonable to be ready for new parts.
A couple of pics..... |

Re: Newbie Here and As a G1 Owner-Need Lots of Tips
The fan side seal is just as predicted, 1/8 inch gap between its remains and the crank. I am a little concerned with the head/head gasket. In the fins where the jug meets the head, it is a little greasy, hoping it isn't from leakage at the head gasket. For as bad as the carb and the seals appear to be, it actually had decent power, so I'm putting it all back together with the new carb, carb base, and seals and we'll see...........
