cart shifting like a car?

Ok I have a lot up at Big Bear Lake! There is a guy up there one of my good friends and he has a 09 Ez go express limo. he wont tell me what he did to make his golf cart do this it has the new 13 hp Kawasaki motor. now when he floors it and takes off it revs up like usual but then it shifts into cruising gear and when i say shift i mean it sounds like a car shifting. i have looked and it has the cvt setup but he has had to do something to it to make it to do that. i have just recently purchased a brand new RXV with the same motor and i want to see if i can get it to do that because it gives it more take off power and when it shifts into cruising gear and your steady it doesnt work the engine. please let me know if anyone knows anything about what he may have done to make his cart do that. Whats the top speed? Is there a clutch pedal and floor shifter?

It is a CVT no clutch or floor shifter just the 2 clutches and the belt

I had that problem when we were machining clutches. . But it was on Club Cars Kawasaki FE290. The thrust washer that the 3 fingers push on got cockeyed when we re-assembled and it would do exactly that. It would run up to 7-10mph and shift, literly. I only worry about 2 things. 1-vibration. 2, our camp speed is 5mph and you would have to run it up past that to shift, then back off. I am considering trying it on a spare clutch I have for my home cart that runs 40+. It has a modified FE350 with machined clutches and 8:1 gears. But at 4000 I am not sure about it thrown out of balance. Sometimes a real heavy spring can cause this affect too.

Sounds like backing off and accelerating to let a slipping belt grab.

We have Kawasaki Mules at work, they are big 2 seat 4X4, they have CVT drive. When you floor them they sound like they shift it may be the spring rate in the clutches that release at a certain RPM.

Sounds like the clutch is screwed up or has improper parts in it. A properly shifting cart should blow right on by him. The cvt is so great because it can keep the engine at peak power, which means it will be faster than anything else. It does have a friction loss over gears, but in a light vehicle it is minimal.

You can tune them to shift any way you want subject to parts available and/or your fabrication skills, and of course the design you are working with. The golf cart units are not always so friendly like that, in particular the yamaha that has no spring in the primary. It is a good unit, long as you run it with an engine that makes power in the stock rpm ranges so it can work well with it. (and you don't want to do wheelies and stuff, etc.)

I thought about this and not sure how you would make a cvt do this shift, as it is not the 'hot setup'. I guess the easiest way is to put a softer but longer primary spring in. That would raise engagement so it revs up on take off but then it would shift a lot likely right up to high gear ratio. You could also change the weights or how they are weighted.

The one thing interesting about this is way back when I ran G1s I had 60 of them there. I compared a lot of them. The fastest ones would rev high then shift faster so the rpm dropped as they gained speed. That cart would win a drag race every time. I think conditions are there that this works in a golf cart, such as an engine with a wide powerband and good torque. If you did this with a sled you would loose every race no doubt, as peak power is key. These G1 would lose rpm as speed went up, but not that much and they did not shift instantly or anything. A good cvt should keep the same rpm the whole time it shifts when at WOT.
