Re: my cart has to go
thanks guys, things will get better. im having to sell it to replace or fix our car. i can fix the car for just under $1000, but its easier for me to sell the cart and come up with enough to buy another car. to come up with the cash to fix it, ill have to sell tools and that is not going to happen cause if i sell my tools, what will i build another one with . ive been thinking about selling the cart just so i can build another one, but now isnt the time. im not going anywhere though, ive still got my dads cart that Andy is going to help me fix up the electrical system on

Re: my cart has to go
Its a '02 Volvo S60. It needs a new throttle body. I found a company that makes a after market one that is plug and play. Other wise ill have to let volvo do it which they are going to put back in the same part that is going to fail again. The throttle body in thesr cars are only good for about 100000 miles. The part i found is $600 shipped. But I've now also put a few other things up for sale to come up with the money. If the cart sells for what i want, then im taking the money and having a new metal building installed for a shop with concrete ive been thinking about selling the cart anyway just to build another, bit i would really like to havr a shop built first because im tired of working in the dirt amd everything being disorganized.

Re: my cart has to go
huh I m not up on Volvos other than that I remember hearing on a car related site (NOT a Volvo site but a site dedicated to a dyed in the wool all American engine (the Slant 6 Dodge of all things) that the older RWD Volvos were tough to beat for a more "modern" daily driver since the Slant Six has been out of production for over 20 years while members restored their old Slant Six powered Darts and Dusters etc
what goes bad on the throttle bodies? The only thing I can think of would possibly be the casrting wearing where the throttle butterfly shaft would pass thru; I have had a few carburetors fixed (including one on a Slant Six, a car I still have) by a machinist buddy who reamed the holes oversized and made bushings to take away the slop between the shaft and the housing. that shoud be able to be done quite cheaply as compared to a new throttle body even if you don't have a buddy with machine shop access also; the originals have an expected life of 100K miles; I'm guessing it'd take a long time to rack up another 100K on that car.... if it were me unless the car was totally not driveable as is go to a JY and get another throttle body and take taht one in for repair then swap with the current one; if not driveable try the JY one as it couldnt be any worse right? and take your original in. Im assuming the injectors are not mounted in the throttle body on this car? by 2002 I dont know of any vehicle that was still throttle body injected but if so and the injector(s) itself would be the problem then they can be rebuilt themselves as well; I'm lucky to have a BOSCH service center <10 miles from my house; I use their services often for injector flushes/rebuilds hmmm an 02 volvo.... that's only 10 years old. Dont seem old enough to give up on. newer than any thing in my driveway or garage.... my newest things are both 97s and both Jeeps.... In fact I'm in the house taking a break as we speak/ I am just finishing a clutch job on one of my Dakota's (the 93 that I pulled the automatic out of and put the 5 speed into myself a while back) |

Re: my cart has to go
The throttle bodies are drive by wire and not cable like normal. In othr words its kinda like a club cars sweeper that wears out because its protective coating is basically camera film which at a 100000 miles wears threw and sends the car into limp home mode. If i go to the junk yard for a replacement part, i could be buying the same problem plus i would still have to take it to volvo to have it programmed in where as the aftermarket one i don't have too since they used a older version of volvos technology which works far better than what is in there now.
http://xemodex.com/technologyimprove.../volvo-8644344 Their website explains it best. The car has other issues like timing belt plugs and not far from needing tires and struts. All in all, its just time for alot of routine maintenance. My rule of thumb is not to invest more than 50% of the vehicles value sincei will never recover it. Also i will never buy another volvo, i dont like vehicles that i can work on or be limited to a dealer to fix if its not under warranty. Im the same way with home a/c systems, i dont like systems that require oem only parts and cost you huge amounts of money just to fix what should be a simple fix. |

Re: my cart has to go
oh... drive by wire I wasn't thinking that 'advanced" as if I had my way I wouldn't have a driveway full of computerized cars but as the road salt capitol of the world (Chicago area) all the vehicles I prefer are rusted flakes and all that's around is computerized crap and much of that is rusting away before my eyes..... its like they went back 40 years in metal protection and paint technology not acceptable for the prices cars command these days..... my 93 and 94 Dakotas are more rust free than many trucks around here that are newer than Y2K.... and I refuse to buy a FWD anything.... 18 years spent working on them to put food on the table have done nothing to kill my hatred for FWD...
when you gotta pull axles to replace an alternator and pull wiper motors and cowling to replace tuneup parts.... NO THANKS I will own trucks and 4X4s until they outlaw them though I have dropped from full size to mid size over the last couple years (still miss my 3/4 ton carbureted trucks and vans) |
