New to me DE4
On Monday I'm picking up a DE4. It looks complete except for the missing batteries. The owner said it ran about 4 years ago when someone stole the batteries, and it's been sitting outdoors, uncovered, ever since.
I have a gas D3 that I have been restoring, but I know NOTHING about electric carts. Is there a way to test if this thing works (or will work) without spending a lot of $$$ on six 6V batteries and a charger? What are the first things I should check, inspect, clean, or replace? Any advice, suggestions, or comments are appreciated. Thanks! |

Re: New to me DE4
There is a way to check the motor. MAKE SURE TO JACK THE REAR END OFF THE GROUND. I'm not familiar with Harley carts so I can't tell you how to apply power to whatever electric motor it has. There has got to be a thread or a sticky elsewhere to find out how to do it. I just bought my first Harley cart today and will be doing the same thing soon. From your post it sounds like mine is in about the same condition. "Ran when it was parked" and batteries missing. Good luck with it! Update please!
I just looked at your photos of the gas Harley. Man what a nice job! Looks better than new! |

Re: New to me DE4
Well, my update is... I decided to combine both of my carts and make a gas powered 4 wheel cart. I did some measuring and comparing today, and the back half of the carts are identical except for the battery trays, etc.
Today I removed the rear body of the DE4, all of the electronics, and cut off the battery trays and other tabs/brackets that will not be needed. I'll probably spend the next few weeks cleaning up the frame and fabricating a new battery tray and gas tank tray. I'll also need to make a new floorpan (aluminum diamond plate) as the stock pan is nothing but rust. I've got a set of Fox Racing coil-overs that I'm going to want to use so more fabrication work will be needed. Hopefully, I'll be able to send the frame to the powder coaters within a couple of months. |

Re: New to me DE4
I'm sure it will be perfect when you get through with it. Got mine home today. Gonna need floorpan etc too. Really impressed with the sturdiness of the rear end of these things. Looks more like a small truck. Oddly, the front seems to be constructed very "light" (much less sturdy?) compared to the rear. IDK, will learn more as I progress.
Good luck with your project jonr3! BTW. Mine is a 4 wheel. |

Re: New to me DE4
So, DE4 must stand for "Electric 4 wheels?"

I understand the dreams and time dilemma. If you just pulled the electronics out there may be some stuff I can use. What part of NC are you in?

Re: New to me DE4
I'm about half way between Charlotte and Asheville. The stuff looks pretty bad... it had been sitting outdoors uncovered for quite a few years.
