First Hog 2009
Got my first 2009 hog last night (130# sow) and my first ever hog using a varmint light. It was an 85 yard shot which is right at the limit of this light. I'm hunting near Abilene, TX. It was a challenge to see a black animal at night. The trail cam makes a pretty good hog indicator when it flashes. The gun is a Tikka T3 in .243.

Re: First Hog 2009
Down here you can take a hog in any way at any time. Not only is spotlighting legal, there are guided hunts you can go on where you get to shoot a gun sporting Generation 3 night vision optics. Check out http://nighthogs.com/. I wish I could justify some cool night vision stuff. I'll probably settle for the next higher power varmint light. What I didn't expect with the night hunting was the effect the muzzle flash had on my vision. It is almost painful to have that bright a light hit your eyes (magnified by the scope). It probably took a minute for my eyes to begin to work again in the dark. And yes, it was a lot of fun. George

Re: First Hog 2009
And, the logical conclusion of a Texas hog hunt.....sausage.
In this case, bratwurst. Lunch is gonna be good. Also, I made a patty out of the leftover sausage when I took the machine apart and fried it. It didn't have enough fat to cook it. The hog was reasonably fat too, and I put every bit of it in the sausage. Makes you wonder just how much fat you're getting with commercial sausage... George |

Re: First Hog 2009
Doesn't make me wonder.. I read labels on packages all the time. I use Morningstar Farms products alot and for the most part I like them better.
I hope you get a really big hog one of these days George. You know I'm fascinated by this whole hog hunting thing. We only have javelina here and they are nasty buggers. Boo |

Re: First Hog 2009
Thanks Boo, I hope I get a big one too. However, the size I just shot is the perfect eating size. I'll take them that size every day. Here is the sounder that came in when I shot this last one:
The one I shot is right in the middle of this picture. The big gray one is the one I wanted, but it is colored exactly like the dirt and in the dark I could not make it out. The light brown one on the left was there too and I couldn't see it well enough either. I always assumed the lighter pigs would be easier to shoot under lights, not so in this case. Not sure I'll get the big one, I have some friends I'll be taking that may get a chance before me. There are more where these came from though. As you can see, they keep making more. If you really want to see what it's like, I took a video of the first pair I shot under this feeder. That time they were much smaller and I waited until I could get 2 lined up: http://72.64.80.21/gks-pictures/2atatime.wmv. Disclaimer: Pigs get shot on that video, if kids watch it you may have to explain where their bacon comes from. George |

If you ever get to Dallas let me know, we can do that. There's also a very popular crappie lake about a mile from my house. I haven't been yet, but hope to this spring. George |

Re: First Hog 2009
Get up near Lake Erie (Toledo, Cleveland) take you out fishing for Walleye, Perch, or smallies. Right now thinking that a vaca is a dream due to school, and work. I do my own venison so know about the fat, Ohio doesn't have the hog problem like in southern states, last wild boar I had was from an uncle that to a hunting trip every year. Gave us bear, moose, elk, boar, as he wasn't a game eatter.

Re: First Hog 2009
Cool pig. I wouldnt mind a hog hunt. Not to many wild ones running around central Indiana. For venison I want to eat as patties we mix it with 10 % hamburger. Not really enough to change the taste, just enough to get it to stick together.
