Default It might be obvious to you guys...

...but since I am not a hunter I must ask those who know.

I almost hit a deer last night with our Jeep. The deer in question only had 1 antler. Question: do deer shed there antlers each year? Is it that time of year now? Did my deer just lose 1 in a fight or something? Poor thing looked so weird!

Whitetail deer grow and lose antlers each year. A deer having one antler either lost it in a fight or possibly damaged in the development stage. Thier antlers are soft while in the velvet stage(hair covering antlers). They lose the covering and antlers dry and harden up. With good genetics and nutrition a whitetail will grow a larger set of antlers each year to the age of 61/2 to 71/2 years old and generally start to decline afterwards. Only whitetail bucks grow antlers unless genetically wierd.

A friend told me that mites kill many deer each year by entering the nose and setting up an infection. He also stated that due to all the dry weather this year the mite population had increased drastically and it was expected to kill around 40% more deer in our area. I don't know if this is true or what but what I was told. Something to think about or look up on the web.

In Georgia thet will start loosing their antlers the last of January into Febuary. Early spring is a good time to hunt for sheds before the rodents eat them up.
A couple of weeks ago when I was at deer camp I was clearing overhanging limbs from a cart trail. I found an old shed about six feet high wedged between a limb and the trunk of the tree. Obviously the tree must have grown see deer lost antler or deer know how to climb trees.
