Default Long Range Shooters?

Just wondering if there are any long range shooters on here. Range by the house just opened a 300yd range (not that long range) but we just put in a 500yd range at the hunting camp.

Been a few years since I tossed anything further than 200 yds. Two groups at 300 yds wednesday, with full value 10-20 MPH winds measured 3/4" and 1-7/16" - I got lucky! Dialed in too much windage, and both groups were 4" and 6" right respectively, but within 1/2" of vertical.

Used to compete at Camp Perry in my younger days ( when I could see )! I used an M1 Garand at 600 yds! I still have the rifle and enjoy getting out there and shooting it every now and then. I can still do pretty well with iron sights. I actually don't have any of my rifles scoped right now. I have a decent Leupold that I'm going to put on a British 303 one of these days. It's just like with the cart, it's a matter of getting to it!

Right now I'm using factory loads - still trying to find the "right" one for my rifle. 270 WSM's have great ballistics (the load I'm testing tomorrow has a 5.3" drop at 300 yds) but about $3 a shot - doing a lot of research into reloading to see cost savings etc. I e gone through 140 rounds in the last 3 weeks with another 40 this weekend - gets $$$

yeah i hear ya. the upfront cost for reloading is expensive. The down the road cost can vary greatly. If all premium components are used, the savings is not great. At that point, its for hobby or the desire for the added performance.

Just like finding the right load when reloading, the same applies to over the counter ammo. I have a Weatherby in .300 mag and it has horrible groups with Fed. Premium ammo. I would buy a different brand (or even same brand with different bullet) each time and you would eventually see which factory load your rifle likes the best.

That thing must be pretty flat shooting. Whats the velocity on those?

The winner as far as accuracy and consistency right now are the Barnes Vor-TX TSX 140gr. 3135 at the muzzle with a 6.1 inch drop at 300 yds, zero at 200.

Heading to the range later today to try out the Federal Premium Nosler Ballistic Tips, 130 Gr. 3300 at the muzzle and a 5.3 in drop at 300. My issue with these is the down range energy. Where I hunt in Alabama it's not an issue - the longest shot is 300 yds - but the 130's don't have the oomph at the longer ranges, IMHO, to adequatly expand.

Hope this comes through:

Its worth it I'm shooting 7mm rem mag 139gr no lead 60gr powder 200 yard silver dollar groups and no kick whatsoever. 300 yds about 6 inch drop groups about 3 inches to old to hold still.

Range Saturday was a blast - I just flat out love to shoot! Only a 100yd range, but seems my rifle likes the lighter loads. the Remington Core Lokt cheapy bullets, shot consistent 1.5" groups through the day.

The Fed Premium Nosler Ballistic tips in 130 gr shot consistent sub 1" groups, with a few flyers and flinchers - when a .300 Win Mag with a brake goes off about 1/10th of a second before your trigger breaks - just the blast can move you off target.

For basic hunting I think I am going to go with the Remington's - good groups, good ballistics and energy and only $35 a box. For anything out past the 200 yard mark, the NBT's will be in the shell holder as well.

Looking at joining the local gun club shortly - they have a 600 yd range with pits.
