Default New Deer Hunting Cabin Advice?

I just purchased a 40 acre parcel in Michigans upper peninsula that is completley surrounded by federal land (no neighbors for miles) and tons of trails, hence the reason for my new cart project.. Anyways, we had plans to build a cabin but due to new codes, which are bascially set-up now to make sure there are no more low cost deep camps being built, we had to back out. If we followed codes, a 24x24 cabin would bascially run me well over $50,000 by the time its done.. Sure, I could do much of the work myself but its not my goal to spend my only weekends up there working my butt off to meet inspection deadlines. I purchased the land to enjoy the area, not to go there and work everytime.

So, I am looking for alternative ways to get some type of building on there for a deer camp without going broke and without having to do to much work (sorry I'm not camping when its zero outside).. Keep in mind during the summer my wife will be going there and she is not into roughing it. We thought about a modular but the smallest ones we can find are over 1000 sg ft and over $40,000 and then I still have to figure in foundation, well and septic.

I then thought about just having a large 24x32 garage or storage builidng put there and then when the final inspection is done, going in and finishing the inside with a bedroom, kitchen and bath BUT by doing so, I have to put in a well and septic, which requires permits and more inspections and then the inspector will want to know what the hell we are doing. We thought about a pull behind 30-35' trailer but even with a slide out, its not enough room for a handfull of guys at deer camp.

To sum it up, I'm looking for low doe ideas?

Thanks
Cuz

I did talk her into using an outhouse, provided I seal it well (minimize spiders and bugs) and panel the inside (make it look clean and purdy).. Local codes now requires an outhouse to go into a holding tank. I guess the good ol days are soon coming to an end.

the atv place we go riding at has some cool cabins.. all they are are HUGE metal tubes i guess like a silo or something.... probably 12ft tall metal tunnel things... they built a flat floor of course in there.... on the right side is 6-7 bunk beds and the left side has a table to put stuff and pretty much a 3-4ft walkway to the end of the tunnel.... they have flourescent lights in the ceiling... the entire walls are wood planks so it looks like an odd cabin.. has electrical outlets... they just built a wall, windows, door on the front.... that cabin is laying down

they have one that's a tunnel going up like a silo... has the metal roof.... they cut a door out.. framed it and put a door with screen door.. cut two windows out... planked the entire walls, floor, ceiling, has a 3 stacked bunkbed, lights, electrical, etc.

pretty neat but you'd def. want to run a window A/C during the summer here

why do you need all those permits and stuff for some hunting land? everywhere here people clear some land... bring in older RVs, popup campers.... clear some areas for tents if you want... our deer camp had 7-8 campers sitting there... we made a few outhouses away from camp, built a barn to store stuff and a lean-to basically to put a few couches, table, a map of the 800acres

I've seen some people convert shipping containers into bunk houses down here that work very well and are nice..If it was me I'd go with the storage shed & finish it out later tell the inspector you want to run a water line to the shed to wash off your truck or what ever..once your done with inspection..tie it into shed and dig your own septic there are plans online just google it..

I built my 16 x 26 cabin for about $14,000, then about $1200 on 12' cover front porch. I had it dried in in about 5-6 days and then took my time finishing. I used trusses to help speed up construction. My labor only except to set the trusses and put on tin roof. I already had a well dug, and made my own septic system with a plastic 55 gallon drum and drain field.

That is pretty cool Mike..
There is no way I could find the time to do something like that myself without it taking my 10 years to finish.

Before I built my cabin, wife and I checked out some trade-in mobile homes at dealers. You know the ones on the back lot. I actually found a decent 32 x 40 for $10,000, delivered and set up. It included heat and air. It needed cosmetics, but could be livable in a day.
