Thought I shot a doe...
I didn't have long to eye this deer before I shot (though I had the scope on 5x), but I really thought I had shot a doe till I walked up on him. Thankfully spikes are legal. I'm not a trophy hunter by any stretch, but this one gets the prize for smallest rack for me. He should be tasty. It is my first Texas deer. George

What did it dress out at. I think my dogs weigh more than that. Not making fun of you I'm just saying I have Great Danes.

Re: Thought I shot a doe...
I didn't have my scale with me, but if I had to guess I would say in the neighborhood of 75lbs. I just moved from Nebraska and our fawns up there weigh about the same as this guy this time of year. NE Texas isn't known for big bodied deer. Here's the last buck I shot up in Nebraska for size comparison, 175lbs. George

OK, I guess I'm used to the cornfed Illinois deer. It is amazing the size difference due to what kind of diet they have. That buck is the size of my male dane and the female is 145-150

Re: Thought I shot a doe...
Yea, I cut my teeth on Illinois deer too. When I started hunting in about 1981 we lived near Wheaton, IL and I hunted on a farm near Rockford. However, deer densities there were nothing like we had in Eastern Nebraska. Unfortunately, the buck/doe ratio was terrible in NE, even though doe tags were virtually unlimited. That seems to be much better in IL and down here.
Where abouts are you hunting in IL? I had a brother living in Yorkville, IL who hunted down by Shelbyville. Beautiful country down there. He just moved to Montana. George |

I hunt around my hometown of Lexington which is near Bloomington. Also my brother and I have some land we hunt in Pike county. Which is not to far from Missouri. Shelbyville is about 2 hrs south of me.

Re: Thought I shot a doe...
Thanks, that's a nice buck in your avatar too. How long have you been shooting traditional?
I've used most bow types ever made, but here's my favorite deer and hunt of all time: I'm using an osage self bow (sinew backed) that I had just finished, new snow, hunting on the ground in snow camo, 20 degrees, Dec 30 in Eastern Nebraska. Called to this little guy with my voice, he came by me and I shot him walking at 15'. That snow camo makes you invisible to deer, he never saw me. I was hunting with a good friend. That is really a good memory from back in 2000. George |
