Default Any reason not to make u-bolts

Any reason not to make my own u-bolts out of 1/2" all thread?
If so cold bend or hot bend?
I cold bent a piece just to see how it would do and it didn't crack.

Jim, I am not a metalurgist SP? but I would be afraid of cracks starting in the grooves on the bent part of the u bolts. I have seen cracks develop in stressed areas on suspension parts on sleds and that is not what you want to see. GOOD LUCK

The root of the thread will be a stress riser. Cracks will form over time.

Instead of using allthread you could use cold rolled stock. Determine your overall length and thread it first. Then heat it and bend it into shape.

Why in the hell would you say its a bad or good idea with out backing it up.
If this were my 7k lb truck I would agree but its a dang golf cart.
Why do it, because since I posted this I have called a local shop that makes them, not the right size (half inch increments only, $12 for 2 good price!) but I have got to drive 15mi one way. Mine falls inbetween.
Why do it, because I have the all thread and I can do it NOW! I don't have to wait a few days for them to be shipped.
So I did I got smart (maybe time will tell) and welded a bead to the outside of the bend to hopefully stop any potential cracking.

Sorry to be so testy but since doing this I have now misplaced the upper plate in which said u-bolt goes thru and I have spent at least 45min looking for it. It couldn't have gone far and it probably only took 20min total to make and paint the **** thing!

If this fails I will either buy the local ones and alter the plate for it to go thru or I will just weld some bolts to this lost freakn plate!
I will now go and get a stiff drink and continue the search

I can assure you that the local shop that builds them doesn't use all thread! Welding the bead was a good idea...
