High Speed motor on big tires?
Question for those with 22" tires and stock gearing - Do any of you run a high speed motor with your setup? Specifically the D&D High Speed motor is what I am looking at. I didn't know if it would burn anything up or if it would work OK. I do love to crawl around in the woods & over obstacles. Id say I currently run about 50% off-road and 50% on flat road.
I've already upgraded everything in my electrical system, 700a controller, 2ga wires, HD F/R switch & super duty 1000 solenoid. Obviously a Torque motor would be the best option for woods, but I've come across this 32v D&D High Speed for price that's hard to pass up. My future plans include an Imaginative 2-speed rear-end with its low gear being 1/2 the gearing of stock — that should overcome any Tq loss I am occuring with this motor correct? Also very curious, Ive heard many people talk about the 32v stock motors working great in a 48v setup, even running cooler, faster & with more tq. I wonder if the same is true with a 32v high speed motor running on 48v? Any thoughts are welcomed, actual experience is greatly appreciated! |

Re: High Speed motor on big tires?
I have confirmed the motor is designed to work in both 36v & 48v configurations. I'm awaiting a reply from D&D on the same questions I asked above. Their website shows a -10% loss in torque over a stock motor.
My biggest concern is the lifespan of my HD F/R switch in this configuration - even though its the heavy duty unit, I think it might be my weakest link. |

Re: High Speed motor on big tires?
Just talked to D&D, turns out the combination above is not going to work – I figured this since this thread has gotten so many views and no one else running this setup. D&D said it would eventually burn the motor up. The only one of their motors they recommend for a series cart on 22” tires, doing light-duty work, & traveling over hilly terrain is the 170-004-0002A ($509.00) – which is actually a reduction in my current speed, but 40% increase in tq.
For speed, their only recommendation is a high-tq motor combined with a high-speed gear but only when on flat ground. When planning on traveling in woods, would need to swap the gears back out. The Imaginative 2-speed tranny might just be my next upgrade as it seems to do both tq & speed nicely. It also has ability to lock / unlock the diff as well as a driveshaft output for future 4WD if desired. |
