I would guess to say probably a little all time cause your still turning the tcase and driveshaft but probably alot in 4x4 it may be a fulltime 4wd setup im not for sure. I like the hyd moto idea it robb prob as much power but you wouldnt have a driveshaft taking up your ground clearance. Putting a hydralic moto would be a pain though

The Imaginative Man. kit says that it is switchable 4wd on the fly. I like the hyd idea but i am not good enough to put one on mine.

Fishing Dude, do you think a hydraulic pump and motors off of a zero-turn mower (Scag or the like) would work? If so, how could you use the rear electric motor to drive it? I like the idea a lot....just trying to figure out how to do it!

on the z-turn mowers....doesnt the hydros just push pressure onto plates and so the more pressure you put on one wheels plates, the less the plates slide against each other and therefore it stops the wheel and the mower turns. arent there still axles going to the tires to provide the spin?

Some probably are like that but some are hydraulic. Here is a link to a page that shows a breakdown of the hydraulic system on an Ex-Mark (the best mower on the market) and it has a pump driving a motor for each wheel. I really like the idea the more i think about it. I think you would end up with a hydraulic tank instead of a bunch of batteries. I just don't know how much power you would need to drive the pump and if the trade off would be worthwhile.

I'm confused with what you guys are talking about. Sounds interesting but do what with hydraulics to make 4wd? Are you talking about having a drive axle/differential up front, which is hydraulically powered by the rear electric drive motor when you choose to run 4wd?

You might be right, Dirty. I think it would be neat if you could get it to work right but i probably couldn't.

I owned a Scag turf tiger ZTR for a few years and we replaced nearly every piece of hydraulics on that silly thing. Mowed like a banshee, but way too much trouble for a golf cart IMO. Besides, all 4WD does is lets me get stuck much further from help than 2WD...
