Tube Frame Workhorse Big Block

Thought to share what I have been up to for the last few weeks. After moving to our new home in 2013 my wife and I have been without a run-a-round means of transportation. It is finally time to remedy that situation in style.

The streets are very narrow and in not very good condition in our home town. With that in mind on prepping for the move we decided that a golf cart would be fun and fit our needs nicely for everyday use. So we had adopted two EZ-GO's, one TXT and one Workhorse 1200, to take with us. Alas, the government wanted to say something about that. It seems if you want to export a vehicle, which a golf cart in this case is, it needs a title to show ownership, so says the US Customs Service. Vehicle titles are issued by your state of residence. My state does not recognize golf carts as vehicles and refuses to issue a title. Nice huh?

With departure time looming we had to decide to leave the carts behind, or figure out some way to take them. So if you have some misc. golf cart parts in a box and no frame with serial numbers it is no problem to export them.

I present to you...Golf carts in a box!

Ok, so now after having a box of parts and no frame to attach them to the fun begins.

This calls for a new tool! Just about the only thing better than buying cool cart parts is buying tools for my habit. The bender is a JD2 model 32 manual bender. Each size of round or square tubing requires it's own die with a bending radius of you choosing.

Here it is with a 1 1/2" die with a radius of 6 1/2". This particular die will bend to 180*.

To get familiar with it the engine cradle was bent up first.

After a little familiarity with how this thing bends we can now start on the main frame rails for the first cart. This is going to be for a TXT size cart. For the main body parts we only have two cowls, with dashes, one set of rear fenders, and one set of steel body panels for the 1200 Workhorse. The rear body tub for the TXT had to be left behind. I will fabricate the simple panels in the TXT length later in the build.

Here is the first main tube being bent and laid out. It is clamped to the table so that I can check that the two straight sections are parallel.

Looks like the beginning of one extensive build. Where is it that your building this, from the ground up (Literally), cart?

Here is one main frame tube bent up. It now needs the front portion cut to length to fit under the dash. These are the tires, 23hp Briggs and the body panels laid out for some inspiration.

Re: Tube Frame Workhorse Big Block

I'll drop a hint or two as to my location just for fun.

It's 90* today and I have the fans running in the shop. The coconuts are ready and delicious. Looks like I will have to wait on this bunch of banana's for a few more weeks.

Oh, and a baby elephant just went down the street.:lhmo: Not kidding!

I don't live in the jungle, but right next to it.

Re: Tube Frame Workhorse Big Block
Today's progress included some cross members and tack welding everything in the correct positions. I have lines scribed on the table. A center line along with total width and perpendicular lines for reference for lengths.

It takes some time fussing with it to fixture it up square, plumb, level, etc. But the effort will pay off in the end as it is easier to align things like the suspension later. It would be nice if the cart would go straight down the road.
