Default Wheel spacer problem while hunting turkey

So I took my Big Cart turkey hunting in west Texas. Everything was going great. West Texas was greener than I have ever seen it with all the rain they got.[IMG][/IMG]
The cart had no problem with the big hills and rocks.
[IMG][/IMG]
Until we were riding down a nice smooth road and I noticed a bit of a shimmy in the rear. I stopped thinking I had a flat and found all four spacer studs stripped out. There was only ONE lug left barely holding on the rear tire. I stole one from the other side to get it on the trailer.

This was as far as I could get them on with the damaged threads.
[IMG][/IMG]

Once I got it home I had to split one of the lug nuts just to get it off.
[IMG][/IMG]
As you can see I also trashed the rim, and my cotter pin is missing.

I removed the studs from the spacer. They are all bent and destroyed.
[IMG][/IMG]

I think I might be able to use the spacer, it not in to bad of shape.

I needed new rims anyway due to severe rusting on the inside, but was planning on waiting a while. Now I have to get some. The current ones are a little narrow for the tires 6 or 7 inch so I am going to look for 8 to ten inch rims.

What do you guys think caused this? The studs were marked grade 8 but I don't trust that they were.

I might as well replace the front rims as well, but they are five lug, so I need to measure them and attempt to find similar rims for front and rear. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

could the lug nuts have been loose - That's what it looks like to me - replace the studs & nuts and you are good to go.

I adjusted the brakes the day before the hunt, so I know they started the trip tight. They loosened up at some point, I am just not sure why.

They are a month or two old, I have had them on and off several times.

I cant quite tell for sure in your pictures, but if your wheels lug (holes) openings are "dished", you should be using "conical" or tapered lug nuts to insure those lug bolts stay centered in there holes. If you just used those "flat" style lug nuts like you have on there, this may allow for some play and they would definitely loosen themselves after riding.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner
Use lug nuts and all new studs. And re-torque that axle nut to 90-140 ft pds and insert a cotter pin

Yep, make sure to use tapered nuts. Also, don't torque them down with an impact, too much force will rip the studs loose. Use a proper torque wrench. Retighten after your first ride.

I actually did use the tapered lugs, I did not re-torque after riding a bit, Ill add that to the list.[IMG][/IMG]
