Default Yamaha G1 clutch spring question

Hey guys i just got done doing a 8" lift on my cart and now hav 23" tires i added some weight to the cart also in the process and i lookin to get asome torque back. I know the belt that is on my cart is pretty well worn and glazed also. I have been doing some reading on the umax springs and was wondering if anybody has had any luck with them and sre there any drive belts that are better then others thanks alot guys for any advise

I'd go with the Plowman's performance secondary kit. I'm assuming this is a stock engine?

Yes, a new belt will make a difference. And a new spring will too. If it's the original spring in that secondary clutch, it' needs replaced. I haven't seen new stock springs, I think they are discontinued. But Plowman's sells an upgraded spring. Some guys have used the Umax spring, but I can't attest for that.

Here's what I will tell you. With a stock G1, 23" tires, and a Plowman's performance secondary kit....I could climb hills on our hunting trails that would make most people crap their pants! Speed will be on the slower side, but it will just climb and climb and climb.... Kinda like an old Jeep with a granny gear. As long as your engine runs good, it will climb all day long! I vote for the Plowman's kit.

Oh, and you'll gain some acceleration too!

When I had the stock engine in my G1 with 23" tires I shimmed the secondary clutch a little over 3/8. It made a huge difference. I once lined it up with four other carts ( 2 club cars and 2 other G1s) and blew them all off the line and they never caught me. They had stock 18" tires and yet with my 23s I easily gained two cart lengths.

The shim will help. However, the machined sheaves have a different degree of angle and this helps throughout the rpm range. Also, if you have a worn out spring (most old carts are worn out), then shimming will only get you back to stock levels, maybe slightly better. I know this. With a stock good condition secondary clutch, I couldn't even climb a drainage ditch incline. With no other changes and a performance secondary clutch, I could climb some of the longest and steepest hills I have ever been on. Very surprised. I also could push decently large amounts of snow, and pull pretty heavy trailers full of firewood. For me, an engine upgrade just made it better, but it was the clutch that made it possible, IMHO. I believe on these machines, the clutches and belts are the most important pieces to getting good performance.

I agree with this. Even with a well built V-twin, if you can't get the power properly to the rear wheels then you are losing out.

Good news! Let us know when you get the clutch kit. The performance muffler didn't really do that much in my opinion. It sounded good, but don't think it added any performance. The performance gains will be found in the clutch kit.
