DIY Lift advice for 93 EZGO
I recently acquired a 93 ezgo from the in-laws. I think I'm going to fab up a lift for it. My plan is to build one like the "Jakes Lift" unless someone recommends a different way. I don't have square tubing but do have some round tube in a few different sizes. Will round be okay? What size would you recommend? I have 1 7/8" in both 1/8" and 1/4" wall. I also have some 2 5/16" with 1/4" wall.
The engine is the 295 so I figure I should keep the weight down best I can but want to make sure it's solid. The cart is mainly going to be used for road use so I don't need anything crazy strong. Also, while I'm at it, would anyone change anything with the front suspension or steering? Thanks in advance for the help! |

Steering linkage will have to be modified if you go high enough

Re: DIY Lift advice for 93 EZGO
Thanks for the heads up. I don't think I'm going to go too high. What do you think about six inches?
As for the steering linkage do most people just add an extension so the tie rods angle down to reach the knuckle? I've been kind of thinking of different things to do. Is it possible to make a couple a-arms and use ball joints? You know, kind of like a truck. Are there any advantages to doing this? Has anyone done it before? Summer is my slow time for work so I'm needing a project. I just want to have some fun with it. |

Re: DIY Lift advice for 93 EZGO
Good deal. That would be great if you could post some pictures. It'll help me decide how high I wanna go with the lift too.
Another reason why I asked if I should do anything different with the steering is because the steering wanders the way it is and it's all stock. I installed the steering repair kit, hub bearings, and did an alignment. It's a little better now because the steering tightened up but is still a little squirrely. I didn't replace the reduction gear but it doesn't seem like it's worn. The wheel start to turn with very little movement of the wheel. I'm thinking toe rod ends but don't know if that would cause it to wander as bad as it's doing it. I do know the shocks are shot. I have some used but basically new shocks off of a Silverado that I've considered making work but don't know if they would be too stiff. Do you think they would work or should I get some different ones? Only reason I've considered using them is because I already have them. |

That tubing you have seems very large. I think 1" would be overkill on a cart unless you are doing extreme off roading.

Re: DIY Lift advice for 93 EZGO
Yes, the tubing your talking about is way too big. RZR only uses 7/8" tube for it's frame if I found the correct information.
The Polaris Ranger uses 1" tubing for their stock arms. From what I've been told there is a lot involved in getting the steering and all figured out once you build the A-arms. I've been thinking of building my own double A-arm set up for my G1 and been doing some research. Most here talk about just converting a 4 wheeler front to use for our carts but I'd still like to build my own and may start gathering supplies. If I do, I'm not going to keep the stock steering setup though. I'll go with a rack and pinion steering setup in mine. I'll be keeping an eye on this one to see if I can gather information or possibly add anything. |

Re: DIY Lift advice for 93 EZGO
Thanks for the replies and advice. I appreciate it.
Looking at pictures of the Jakes Lift it looks like they use maybe 1 1/2" x 2" or 1" x 1 1/2" square tubing. If I went with that style of lift wouldn't 1" round be too small? If I go with the double control arm I can see where I'd want to go with 1"? Just looking for advice. I do have some 1" round tubing. |

Re: DIY Lift advice for 93 EZGO
Yeah, I've wondered about how the steering would be to get aligned and working well. My steering is kind of loose now and that's after installing a rebuild kit and new hub bearings. I too would like to go with a different steering setup.
I too would rather build mine from scratch. More so because I enjoy doing stuff like this. Smokindawg...I'm going to do some more research too. If you run across any info you think I need to know I'd appreciate it if you could pass it along and I'll do the same. |

All the Jakes long travel kits I've seen were round stock for the A-arms. I know there is a maker that uses the square tube too make their A-arm kits.
