Air Shocks!
Ok, I have a question. I've done a search and although I've seen threads including them before, I've not been able too find anything.
I had my cart out with the 25hp engine and it ran good, but with the week springs on the 400EX shocks I have a lot of bump steer. I plan to eventually either build a long travel front end or adapt a double A-arm front end from an atv, but until I do that I'm looking to beef up the front end to deal with some of the bump steer. I've heard beefier shocks/springs help a lot so thought I may put air shocks under the cart. Anyone else that has lifted their cart with air shocks and has information on Positives and Negatives going this way please post them. Also pictures would be a plus so I can see how they are mounted and how the front end sets. I also wondered how anyone that used them decided which length shocks they needed for their application. I figured that I'd need something where about the middle of retracted measurements and extended measurements was where my present shocks set. Thanks in advance for any help or thoughts! |

Re: Air Shocks!
It's my experience that the single a arm front end requires a "short travel shock", like the stock Yamaha shocks for example. The more travel the single a arm has, the more the steering geometry will be off. So smaller shocks are the ticket, not necessarily stiffer shocks. By limiting the travel, you accomplish the goal of limiting the bump steer. Stiff shocks will do the same thing, but will ride very harshly.
So, in my opinion, go for the stock Yamaha shocks. The only thing that would change my opinion is if you carry heavy loads (more than two people). In this case, a heavier spring would be needed to prevent constant bottoming. Edit: The atv front end will be the best thing you ever did!!!! Go for it! |

Re: Air Shocks!
The ATV front end is the way I plan to go in the future since you'll get brakes and all with the swap.
Thanks for the advice. |
