Need help! Tie rod advice after 6" axle lift. Opinions and information needed
Ok guys, I was wondering if I could get a little help and advice on and issue that I'm having after the lift...?
So basically, my cart is a 2001 ezgo electric (or should say 2001.5+ with the 4 bolt steering). I ordered the 6" lift, wheels and tires from Steeleng Golf Carts (sponsor on here). They have great customer service and prices as well. Well, got the lift and everything in. Went to put it on, and noticed that it came with a new tie rod. My issue is that my tie rod I currently have has male ends and screws into my factory tie rod. I got it all put together without much issue and am using my factory tie rod at the moment. The only thing is (haven't aligned it completely yet), is this cart walks ALL OVER THE ROAD. To the point where it is dangerous and I don't like how much thread is showing on the tie rod ends. The new tie rod they sent was male (threaded) on the ends for a female tie rod end to screw onto. Here is my "factory" tie rod and ends. This is what has me very confused. When I search for ezgo tie rod ends for my cart, they all come up for the most part as un-greasable ones. They all look the same as an OEM part, so mine are obviously different. When I called Steeleng, they told me that the tie rod they sent me was the only one they send for the kit and they've only had like 1 other customer call with the same issue. I sent the picture to another business I know that builds golf carts, and they said that it doesn't look like a factory tie rod for my cart. Also what is confusing me is when I look up like Jake's 6" lift kit (which I assume mine is a clone of), their instructions say something about if your tie rod ends ARE NOT GREASABLE, then you need to purchase there longer tie rod for their kit. Well, my tie rod ends are greasable, but once again, common sense tells me that its pretty dangerous to have that much thread showing on the ends, either way, the cart walks all over the road. I don't want to risk a tie rod breaking, but mine are greasable like the Jakes instructions say. So what do you guys think, and what are my options? Is my tie rod factory, or something else? Does that look right with how much thread is showing? Only other option I can think of is to buy new non-greasable tie rod ends to try and mount on the new tie rod that came with my lift, to see if that fixes it. Any help is appreciated. The cart turned out great, did find out I have to replace the bushings in the rear leaf springs since they fell apart while installing the rear part of the lift. Got new black seat covers for front and about to have black rear seat ordered. |

Can't tell much by your pictures, how about a straight on view from the front?
Do you know the brand of the lift? also some of the newer ones had these tie rod ends..not cheap |

May not help but with a yamaha you can get a pipe nipple 1/2" and it fits right over the rod, so you cut it and weld it the length you need....assuming you have access to a welder. You would have to measure your rod, 1/2 pipe is about 1/2" inside.
It may be a standard rod you can get someplace, but I have no idea where. I've seen equipment with that kind of setup. |

Yes Steve, its from Steeleng Golf Carts. And the pictures are for refrence of the tie rod ends that are on my cart vs. what shows up when I search (just like the ones in the link you posted).
The ones in your link are the ones that always pop up, so what do I have? Are mine aftermarket? And the pictures are to show how much thread is showing on them. Seems like they shouldn't be un-threaded that far from the actual tie rod to get the alignment. |

Looks by their site they carry the Jake's lift or looks like one anyway, hope someone here that is familiar with the Jake's can
help you out. You do have a factory tierod but sometime btwn 2001.5 and present they went to the male ends on the tierods. BTW, can you get a 1/4" of toe-in on the front? and still have enough of the tierod end safely threaded in the tierod? |

Yeah, I believe its a clone from the Jake's 6" lift. It seems very well made compared to the Jakes (I had a Jake's kit on my last cart)
I haven't completely done the alignment yet, just got it together a couple of weeks ago and drove it around the block a few times due to free time. I feel like even when I get it aligned or close, that is still too much thread showing on the ends and seems unsafe, but hopefully someone with a Jakes lift (or even better the same lift I have) can chime in on their setup if they happen to have the same tie rod as mine. |

How much thread is still inside? That's way more important than whats outside.
It'll be this weekend, but I can check out mine with a 5" all-sports and see how much thread I have showing, cannot recall off the top of my head. |

Hopefully I will be able to see this weekend how much is left. Doesn't feel like a whole lot. I also plan on running wheel spacers on there more than likely so...
