Advice on building a hunting cart
Hi guys I'm in need of a cart for hunting. For what I'd mainly be using it for (getting to and from the blind/ hauling deer ect) I think I have decided to go with an electric cart. The problem is I have no knowledge of anything related to carts. I've been reading some threads trying to educate myself as best I can. I'm on a limited budget, but don't mind upgrading slowly. The terrain I hunt is delta farm land fairly flat a few rolling hills. I would try my best to stay away from mud. I the spring however I hunt some pretty steep terrain. I've look locally at a few used cart for sale 3 Club Car ds pre 2000, 2001, 2006. 2009, 2010 Ezgo Txt and 2010, 2011 Ezgo RXV... What would you recommend or is there any advice I could get from the experts? Anything would be appreciated.

Re: Advice on building a hunting cart
Welcome to BGW!
Asking about cart brands is like asking about chevy vs ford vs dodge. You will get a whole lot of different answers. Your budget and cart prices in your area will be more important than brand in my opinion. When I am looking for carts to buy now, I look for non running carts with dead motors or controllers that I can pick up cheep. I know I will want to replace both anyway. Upgrading over time can be challenging if you are wanting to increase voltage later, so its best to pick a voltage and stick with it, so your not re-buying batteries, chargers, contactors or controllers. For the flat land hunting you mentioned any old cart would get the job done as long as its in good working order, you may not like the speed or acceleration much but it would do the job. For big hills you might get away with a higher amperage controller and larger cables. There are hundreds of great builds and proven performance combinations detailed here at BGW, just take your time, ask questions and check out some of the build threads. |

Re: Advice on building a hunting cart
Forgive my ignorance, but I was reading another thread and they talking about "creeping" or driving slowly around. I feel like I would be doing this checking trail cams, hanging stands etc... Is there a certain type of cart that would work better in those situations? They mentioned the cart getting hot

Plenty of guys run sepex/regen/shunt motors at low speeds, some over heat, some don't. |

Re: Advice on building a hunting cart
Generally series drive is recommended for steep terrain. Also the stock motor and amperage delivery system is designed for golf not hunting and flat not steep terrain so upgrading a little at a time may be out of the question come spring.
Careful you don't overpay for a cart that looks like a hunting vehicle but has golfing guts under the seat. Generally dealers love to sell these carts. Everybody likes the big tire look and they perform just fine in the parking lot. For hunting you want a series cart 500a control, HD F&R, & 2g cables throughout. Stock motors are 2-3.5 hp and aftermarket torque motors are 8-11 hp. Good luck and feel free to ask more questions. |

Re: Advice on building a hunting cart
just a question why not a gas golf cart I have a 2000 Yamaha and you just cant beat it its a lot quieter than a 4 wheeler and I can pull my 5x10 trailer behind it with 6 55 gallon drums of corn on it. The other side of it is its a lot easier to get a buddy to bring some gas than a drop cord in the woods just my 2 cents
